Henry Glasheen, who recently retired as the chairman of the Summit County Republican Party, withdrew his candidacy for a leadership position in the state party the day before the vote.
Glasheen, a Snyderville Basin resident, had been seeking the office of vice chair, the No. 2 ranking position in the state party hierarchy. Glasheen said in an interview he ended his bid on Friday based on time constraints. He said he wants to be active in the state Republican Party on a committee level.
He endorsed the eventual vice chair winner, Willie Billings. The winner had been the leader of the Washington County Republican Party.
Glasheen in April declared himself a candidate for chairman of the state Republican Party but eventually mounted the bid for vice chair.
When he announced his decision to seek the chairmanship, Glasheen said his platform would include issues such as increasing voter participation by Republicans, reforming the caucus system and widening fundraising efforts by the state GOP.
Another Republican from Summit County, Kristin Cannon Brown, was defeated on Saturday in her bid to become the secretary of the state party. The office went to Michelle Mumford of Salt Lake City.
