North Summit High School seniors earning a cumulative grade point average of at least a 3.7, received special honors during an awards assembly at the school this week. According to NSHS Counselor Lance Pace, about 15 students received the award and will wear special "cords" with their graduation gowns next week during the ceremony scheduled on May 24. The school also named its valedictorian, senior Darby Richins and salutatorian, Senior JR Hellander, during the assembly.
Becoming valedictorian has been one of Richins’ long-time academic goals, she said, adding, that the school determines the valedictorian by calculating 75 percent of the students’ GPA and 25 percent ACT score. She maintained a 3.97 GPA and 31 on her ACT.
Richins is also the senior class president and led her class through several fundraising initiatives this year, she said, adding that she also helped organize student body activities and school-wide assemblies. She plans to attend Utah State University this fall to pursue a degree in business.
"I’ll miss the small camaraderie of North Summit and knowing everyone here," she said.
According to Pace the school awarded scholarships to several students with local scholarships, including some from the Park City Arts Council, and the Park City Elks Lodge.
"We recognize students that were awarded from the local colleges and universities too," he said. "This year, we have some from almost all of them and they vary in size."
