Two people were taken to a hospital in Salt Lake City Wednesday night after a semi-truck carrying Duraflame fire logs crossed the median and flipped on Interstate 80 near the Summit Park exit.
According to Utah Highway Patrol Corporal Todd Johnson, a large piece of lumber fell off the back of another semi-truck traveling eastbound on I-80 at 9:21 p.m. A second semi-truck swerved to avoid the piece of lumber, crossed the median, traversing three westbound lanes and flipped.
"No other cars were involved which is very surprising," Johnson said. "The lumber truck was pulled over about six miles further down the road and the driver will probably be cited for failure to secure a load."
The two occupants of the vehicle that crashed, a male and female, were extricated from the cab and taken to the University of Utah Hospital with serious injuries, Johnson said, adding that both were expected to recover. Their names have not yet been released.
Johnson added that the semi-truck began to leak fuel after it rolled but crews were able to contain it. Park City Fire District Chief Bob Zanetti said Park City firefighters were on scene until 1:25 a.m. assisting in the clean up of fuel and debris. Portions of east-and westbound lanes were blocked for two and a half hours.
