Digging up some old elementary school memories might be a good idea for Park City High School Seniors who graduated from Trailside Elementary School in fifth grade. This will be Trailside’s second year offering a $500 scholarship to PCHS seniors.
According to Trailside Parent Teacher Association member Lesa Peers, students who are eligible must have graduated from the elementary school, will be graduating from PCHS, and plan to attend a four-year college/university.
Peers said the PTA came up with the scholarship after receiving a check from Smith’s Food and Drug for participating in their ‘Earn and Learn’ rewards program. She said community members helped support the school by shopping at Smith’s and earning rewards points.
“We just said we want to pay it forward and do something to pay our community back and so our PTA voted to do this scholarship,” she said, adding that, last year, the teachers read the essays and voted, but this year the PTA will put together a parent committee to select a winner.
“We plan to continue over the next few years as long as we can,” She said. “We’re trying to get the word out and if students meet the criteria there is no reason they shouldn’t apply.”
Last year, Park City High School Senior Wade Crowther received the scholarship. Crowther used the money to attend Utah State University as a freshman, said his mother, Linda Crowther. After turning 19 this year, Wade decided to serve a two-year LDS mission. Upon return, he plans to go back to USU.
“He used it in the fall and it helped him with tuition and books and gives him money when he gets back,” she said.
To apply for the scholarship, students can pick up an application and guidelines from Park City High School Scholarship Advisor Nancy Michalko. Applications must be submitted by Friday, April 20.
