Park City Day School 5th-graders in Janice Brewster’s class presented a proclamation to Park City Mayor Dana Williams at a City Council meeting on Nov. 28 asking to declare Nov. 11 the official “Park City Day of Giving,” according to Brewster. It was passed unanimously.
Brewster said Park City Day School history teacher Melissa Christensen helped the students write the proclamation that was presented at the meeting with more than 10 5th-graders attending to show their support.
“We have so many incredible non-profits in this town,” Brewster said. “I think most people want to give, they just need to know where the greatest need is. This way, instead of non-profits hunting down donors, it would just be a declaration of a day of giving to the local non-profits.”
The Park City School District will promote Live PC Give PC this week to encourage students to donate to their favorite non profit organization. According to Treasure Mountain Leadership teacher Julie Hooker, the students hope to raise $792.
We are encouraging every single person at school to donate,” Hooker said. “We have 710 students and 82 staff members. We’re looking for 100 percent participation and we’re hoping to get a dollar from everyone.”
Two weeks ago, the leadership class chose three non-profit organizations to support, including the People’s Health Clinic, Park City Follies and the Eccles Center. The school will have jars for students and faculty members to collect donations and the proceeds from the leadership class after-school ice cream sales will also be put toward a local non- profit.
“It really is about getting the word out and celebrating giving,” Hooker said. “The students realize that non-profits really are the heart of Park City and that it’s all about giving back. It has really been eye-opening for our kids.”
According to Park City High School counselor Nancy Michalko, the students in the Key Club raised awareness last week by creating a banner for students to pledge their support to raise awareness throughout the community. The students will be passing out fliers and information cards this week, according to Michalko.
Live PC Give PC volunteer Liza Salowey said the Parley’s Park student government will be working on a message to present to the student body this week. Other schools throughout the district will be sending home a newsletters to parents and reminding students with morning announcements about Live PC Give PC.

Big Brothers Big Sisters
Big Brothers Big Sisters will host an event at Bangkok Thai on Main Street on Friday, Nov. 11, from 7 to 9 p.m. According to Big Brothers Big Sisters Summit and Wasatch County Coordinator Ericka Wells, the organization will have laptop computers set up in Bangkok Thai’s Club Monsoon, where people can donate to their organization and others.
Wells’ birthday is also on Nov. 11. Instead of gifts this year, Wells is asking friends and family members to support Live PC Give PC and local non-profits.
The money donated to Big Brothers Big Sisters will go to support new and existing volunteer and student matches,” Wells said. “We will also use the money to recruit new volunteers and provide support during the time that the volunteer is matched with the student.”
Park City Education Foundation
The Park City Education Foundation parent liaisons have been promoting Live PC Give PC in the Park City School District, according to Events Manager Jennifer Billow. She said the parent liaisons have been working with the student councils and leadership classes in an effort to raise awareness about giving to local nonprofits.
“The Park City Foundation has done a great job. What a great opportunity. We have been excited about it for a long time,” she said. “We’re happy to be a part of this and we’re hoping to make more contacts.”
Park City Cooperative School
The Park City Cooperative School is hoping to gain communitywide support on Nov. 11. According to Park City Cooperative School teacher Linda Perkins, donations to the school will go toward the school’s operation expenses, which are not covered by tuition.
“It’s a perfect opportunity for parents, grandparents and alumni to help support our fundraising efforts,” Perkins said. “We’re hoping to use these funds to help our regular operating costs and keep our tuition down to one of the lowest in town for an early childhood program.”
