Melissa Crotty is rooted in Park City.
Only she spells it root’d. It’s the name of her new home décor store on Main Street that also offers clothing from Flight Boutique.
Crotty’s store is eclectic but so are her tastes. She stocks what she likes. It has worked so far. She successfully managed a jewelry store in the Midwest and owned a home décor store in Ohio before falling in love with Park City.
After visiting friends here, she knew she couldn’t live anywhere else. Crotty sold everything and took a job at Elegante on Main Street for two years.
With support from the owner there, she decided to take a risk and open her own store. The owners of Flight Boutique subleased to her their second location at 577 Main Street. She opened in early October.
Root’d offers a variety of items for a home ranging in price from $4,000 to a $5 scented candle. She almost cried when her first item sold because she loved it so much.
The variety of items includes a willow branch chandelier made by a mother-daughter art team, hand-blown glass by Juliska, silver pewter pieces some whimsical, some function in combination with stone, antler, porcelain and reclaimed wood materials. She also has crack-resistant mango-wood bowls, a reclaimed teak horse-head sculpture, letter-press greeting cards and art-inspired gift wrap.
The eclectic nature of her style was inspired by her time as a jewelry designer.
“I found that if you mix materials like metals, stones, chains and leather you get cool looks,” she said. “I realized you can mix and match and be whimsical.”
If a client has their own style, Crotty said she’ll help them pick out pieces that match it.
If you like her style, the store is set up to show it off. She has a white hutch full of white glassware paired with a dark wood mantle, for example. Using lighter colors to add splash is something she saw more often in the Midwest, but less here.
Although Crotty would like to introduce her Midwestern style and sensibilities to Main Street, she mostly wants to learn from Park City.
“Everyone I’ve met here is so nice,” she said.
When she became stressed out prior to opening, Crotty said she would occasionally walk over to a neighbor and chat about their store.
“They were so supportive,” she said.
Except for the place where she was born, nowhere has felt so much like home, she said. That helped inspire the name of the store.
“Home is not where you reside, but where you hang your hat, have dinner, relax and watch television,” she said.
Her mother is an artist and painted a bright tree with deep roots near the entrance of the store. Caught in the branches is a leaf, paying homage to Flight Boutique.
“I love the mix of clothes and décor. It’s two stores in one,” she said.
Home décor stores can be overwhelming, she added. Some are so full the mind gets distracted and can’t focus on the goal at hand. Root’d is designed to showcase the pieces and make it comfortable and homey to wander through.
The store’s grand opening is Nov. 12 from 5 to 9 p.m. with food, beverages and “lots of flowers,” Crotty said.
