A moose family Wednesday afternoon took up residency in Coalition Park at the bottom of Main Street, attracting a steady stream of onlookers and people taking snapshots.
At least three Park City police officers responded to the scene, using their vehicles to block the trolley turnaround to keep drivers away from the animals. Phil Kirk, a Police Department captain who responded, said the police received the report at 4:17 p.m.
The moose — a cow and two calves — were still in the park at 8:30 p.m. Police officers continued to guard the site into the evening.
At least 20 people gathered across 9th Street from Coalition Park to gander at the moose at one point. Kirk ordered people not to cross the street toward the moose, which spent the time relaxing on the ground and munching leaves.
Many people in the crowd took photos. Some drivers stopped momentarily to take a look or shoot photos as well.
Moose are plentiful in the Park City area, and the Police Department often receives reports of sightings, including in the vicinity of Main Street. It is rare, though, for a family of moose to spend so much time in a busy area like the bottom of Main Street.
