Jon Williams will be teaching Woodworking Technology at Park City High School along with exploring technology and construction technology for seventh- and eighth-graders at Treasure Mountain International School this year.
Williams, who lives in Kamas, graduated from Utah State University. He spent 12 years of his career in construction and seven years in the classroom teaching in various Utah schools.
“I like teaching. But for a while I just wanted to build homes. I like to build and I’m the type of person that likes hands-on things,” he said.
Williams said the woodworking technology has 26 students. The goal of the class is for students to learn skills in cabinet making. Students built a CD rack at the beginning of the year and are now working on crafting serving trays. Williams said the project will take about two weeks. The next project will be making nightstands, which will take up to five weeks.
“There are some students that have already taken the class and want to take it again. I let those students take the initiative,” Williams said. “Then, there are students who don’t have experience in woodworking and we go over the basics.”
Williams’ hobbies include being outdoors, fishing, camping and spending time with his family. He said teaching in the classroom is going well.
“I like it here. The kids are great and they seem excited to learn and are interested in the subject matter,” he said.
According to Williams, he’s looking forward to working with his students and seeing them meet their goals.
“This is an elective class, so I teach students who want to take my class. I want them to have a good time and teach them some skills. It will be fun to watch them do that,” he said.
