Summit County’s newest library is celebrating its upcoming opening by showcasing a national best-selling author and local artistic talent.

Brandon Mull, The New York Times best-selling author of the “Fablehaven Series,” was originally asked to hold a book signing to celebrate the scheduled opening of the Coalville Library on Oct. 1. Due to construction and permitting delays, the library won’t be open until the end of October, according to Library Director Dan Compton.

“We really wanted this event to mark the grand opening,” Compton said. “Even though the opening has been delayed, we knew the community would be really excited about Brandon Mull coming, so we didn’t want to cancel.”

The book signing has been moved from the library to the North Summit Middle School where Mull will be signing books at 6 p.m. on Wednesday, Oct. 5. Mull will also be speaking at a middle school assembly earlier that day.

To celebrate the new library on a local level, the Summit County Public Arts Advisory Board is asking artists to submit proposals for textile banners to mark the different sections of the library.

“The furniture and colors of the library have been picked out, but the library has exposed rafters and everyone thought it would add some color to hang banners marking each section,” said board member Stephanie Donovan. “We are looking for four banners to mark the teen, children’s, adult nonfiction and adult fiction sections.”

The banners should be as creative as possible and made with a variety of materials but cannot cost more than $4,500 to produce.

“We are hoping they are interpretive and will add an interesting visual element,” said Compton.

“I just got a call from an artist in Midway who was really excited and a Park City artist who wanted to find out more about it,” Donovan said. “I am hoping we can drum up some really good submissions.”

The art council previously teamed up with the county library to hold a design contest for the side of the Bookmobile.
