A driver backed up too close to the edge of Poison Creek in the upper reaches of Old Town Wednesday evening, sending the vehicle into the largely dry creek bed, the Park City Police Department said.
The vehicle, a Hyundai Elantra, was upside down in the creek when the police arrived at the scene at the southern end of Daly Avenue, just past the paved section of the road.
The police said two people were inside when it went into the creek. Neither of them was injured, the police said.
One of the people inside is from Kentucky and the other is from Indiana, according to the police. The vehicle is a rental car and had Idaho license plates.
A police officer who responded said approximately one teaspoon of gasoline spilled from the vehicle.
The driver was ticketed for driving too fast for the conditions, the police said. That category of ticket is more commonly thought of as one given to people driving quickly in the rain, sleet or snow. The police, though, made the decision to issue the ticket based on the loose gravel and other conditions on that section of road.
The Park City Fire District responded as well. A tow truck was summoned and pulled the vehicle out of the creek at approximately 8:45 p.m.
