An errant BB shot by a youngster struck a bicyclist in Thaynes Canyon last Friday, the Park City Police Department said.
Rick Ryan, a police captain, said the bicyclist was not injured. The bicyclist was hit in the back of the head below the helmet he was wearing, Ryan said. The BB did not break the skin, he said.
Ryan said the man was riding southbound on Three Kings Drive close to the Silver Star development when he heard the sound of an air gun firing. He then felt the BB hit him, Ryan said. The BB was made of plastic, he said.
The police were summoned and found a 10-year-old boy nearby with a BB gun, according to Ryan. The police were told the boy was aiming at a utility box, hit the target and the BB ricocheted in the direction of the bicyclist.
The boy ran inside and told his father what had happened, and the father called the police, Ryan said. The bicyclist stopped and also called the police, he said. The father took control of the gun, Ryan said.
Ryan said it is illegal to fire a projectile inside the city limits, a ban that includes shooting a BB gun. The police did not take action against the boy.
Ryan said the father and the son are visiting Park City. The father kept the gun and told the police he would not return the gun to the boy until they left Park City.
The Police Department did not have information about the bicyclist.
