Gabacho’s Nachos opened at 5 South Main Street in Kamas on Aug. 1 offering inexpensive Mexican food with a drive-through window.
The eatery is the second Mexican restaurant to open in Kamas this summer, but owners Jackie and Jace Cannon say the two places are completely different and both families fully support one another.
The Cannons are from California and Jackie Cannon said she really missed the street vendors in San Diego and Tijuana selling traditional tacos and carne asada.
Gabacho’s Nachos sells carne asada, chicken or pork tacos in two corn tortillas served with chopped onion, cilantro, cheese, salsa and a lime wedge.
The recipes are their own and everything is made fresh, Jackie said.
The enchilada sauce is red or green and as traditional as it comes. The chile verde already has loyal fans who call it the best they’ve ever had, she said.
“The enchilada sauces are a big hit. They are the perfect blend of earthy cumin with sweetness and tomato sauce,” she said. “People who come here really enjoy the sauces.”
And true to street-vendor style, the food is affordable and can be prepared quickly. Combo items with rice and beans are under $5 and simple items like chips with nacho cheese and the a la carte menu cost even less.
Jackie said she wants to appeal to South Summit High School students when classes resume.
With one of the only drive-through windows in Kamas, Gabacho’s Nachos has been especially popular in the evenings with people driving home from work and wanting to pick up something fast.
The restaurant also takes call-in orders so the food is already bagged and ready to hand out the window when the customer drives up.
The name was Jace Cannon’s idea. Gabacho means “white boy” and he always wanted to own a restaurant called Gabacho’s Nachos. It rhymes and it’s funny, Jackie said.
The restaurant has nacho dishes with both corn and wheat tortilla chips including sopapillas sometimes called desert nachos.
To please everyone, Gabacho’s Nachos also sells a salad and a vegetarian burrito. The burrito’s bell peppers, onion and squash are all grilled. It’s a unique take on the traditional item, she said.
“The menu attracts all types,” she added.
The Cannons are also working on developing a breakfast menu after receiving several requests.
Currently the hours are between 11:30 a.m. and 8 p.m. Monday through Saturday with the drive-through window open later on weekends.
The Cannons moved to Kamas about four years ago and Jackie said they love the local business community. Everyone knows each other and they’ve received great support for the restaurant.
“It has exceeded my expectations. We’ve been overwhelmed but that’s a good problem,” she said.
She already has two parties booked for the week, Jackie said.
