The Egyptian Theatre launches a month of music with The Crescent Super Band and The Voodoo Orchestra, Aug. 12 for a one-night-only show.

Both the Crescent Super Band and The Voodoo Orchestra are comprised solely of area students and are directed by the Caleb Chapman. Chapman manages, again and again, to raise his students to their highest musical potential, achieving applause, accolades, and a plethora of scholarships to boot.

The Crescent Super Band has been awarded the Downbeat Award of Excellence as the best big band in the country from Down Beat Magazine, both in 2007 and 2010.

The band has won FIVE Best in State Awards including Best in Arts & Entertainment, and Best Professional Instrumental Group.

The band has been featured at many of the world’s most prominent music festivals including venues in Switzerland, the Netherlands, Italy, and France. The band also has a strong national presence with recent performances in Chicago, Boston, New York, Telluride (Colorado), and Park City.

The musicians have garnered the attention of many of today’s top artists as well. Since its inception the CSB has performed with over 200 guest artists including Grammy-winners Gordon Goodwin, Joe Lovano, Bob Mintzer, Randy Brecker, Nicholas Payton, Christian McBride, Eric Marienthal, Dave Weckl, Bob Mintzer, Ernie Watts, Peter Erskine, and Dave Samuels. Other notable guest artists have included Jeff Coffin (Dave Matthews Band), Chester Thompson (Genesis), Steve Smith (Journey), Gregg Bissonette (Ringo Starr) and jazz icon, Toshiko Akiyoshi.

The Crescent Super Band has released six full-length albums on the Big Swing Face Record Label, including their latest release, “Body & Soul.”

Caleb Chapman & The Voodoo Orchestra are a riotous swing band that revisits the high energy jump swing of the ’30s and ’40s. They are currently one of Salt Lake City’s hottest live shows.

Formed in 2007, this 20-piece band has gained national attention for their high energy performances. While they may be a professional band, they are all yet under the age 18. Well-loved along the Wasatch Front, they headlined Salt Lake City’s First Night Celebration in 2010 and 2011.

The Voodoo Orchestra was recognized in 2010 by DownBeat Magazine with the award for “Outstanding Rock/Blues Performance”.

Director Caleb Chapman was awarded the prestigious 2011 John LaPorta International Jazz Educator of the Year Award by the Berklee College of Music and the Jazz Education network.

The award is named for jazz education pioneer, John LaPorta, who was a faculty member at Berklee for over 30 years, and represents the highest honor in jazz education.
