A bicyclist was badly injured in an accident on Bonanza Drive on Friday, the Park City Police Department said, indicating the initial investigation did not find evidence that a driver caused the crash.
The Police Department said the man lives in Park Meadows. The police did not release the person’s name or age.
Phil Kirk, a police captain, said the accident occurred at approximately 3:30 a.m. He was wearing a helmet but suffered a serious head injury, the police said.
According to the Police Department, a passing driver contacted the police with a report the victim was on the ground on the 1900 block of Bonanza Drive, close to the Iron Horse Drive intersection. The victim was in the northbound lane of the street with a blue mountain bike, the police said.
The passing driver who filed the report with the police blocked traffic with her vehicle to protect the bicyclist and called 911, the police said. A police officer who reached the scene first found the victim unconscious but breathing. The officer was not able to wake the victim, the police said.
An ambulance took the victim to Park City Medical Center. He was then taken by medical helicopter to a hospital in Murray, the police said.
Police officers notified the man’s roommates in Park Meadows and family members of the man on the East Coast.
Kirk said on Tuesday the man’s condition is improving. He remained hospitalized on Monday, Kirk said.
The Police Department continues to investigate the accident. Kirk said the police want to interview the victim when he is able.
