The HGTV network recently announced it had selected River Meadows Ranch near Midway as the site for its 2012 “Dream Home Giveaway” for its television show of the same name.

The video announcing the location is one-minute, 37-seconds. The fact that one third of that time is spent showcasing the summer and winter offerings of Park City “just around the corner” suggest local resorts are likely to receive some free marketing from HGTV over the coming months.

The show’s host Jack Thomasson says he selected the site because of its location along the Provo River. On the network’s blog, HGTV tells fans that the home will be “built in a style that James Dean’s character Jett Rink would find particularly appealing.” Rink is a supporting character in the movie “Giant” about cattle and oil barons in Texas.

In the television show, viewers enter a contest to win the season’s “dream home.” Past locations include a New England ski town, California wine country and an arid desert.

Thomasson does a lot of talking in one minute, 37 seconds, but he doesn’t say anything about either Midway or the Heber Valley. It is clear from the video that what attracted him to the site was its location on the Provo River and its close proximity to Park City and Salt Lake City.

The home will be 4,000 square feet with four bedrooms and four and a half bathrooms. It is scheduled to be completed in December.

Draper-based Rimrock Construction won the contract to build the home. Mark Hampton, a founding partner, said he was likely invited to bid on the project because of the firm’s reputation as a high-end residential builder in Utah and Wasatch counties.

HGTV has restricted his use of their network and television show in his firm’s marketing. Previous seasons have not even credited the home builder, he said. Besides the opportunity for work, the only benefit to Rimrock from the show will likely be an elevation of its reputation locally, he said.

The seven months given to finish the home is a fast schedule, Hampton said, but Thomasson keeps careful track of their progress to make sure the “dream home” is built to his specifications.

“It’s very similar to what we’ve done before; it’s very high end with excellent finishes,” Hampton said. “This is not the first rodeo for Jack and his team. They know what they want and have high expectations for how the home will be built.”

Filming goes on constantly, he added. Thomasson even has cameras set up so he can monitor progress in real time from afar.
