Fourth time wasn’t a charm for the Park City High School girls’ lacrosse team.

The Miners, facing Bingham for the fourth time this season in the state quarterfinals, were eliminated last Friday at Olympus High School 11-2.

Park City head coach Amy Hafets said her team did not play cohesively, as it typically does in important games, and that’s what led to the Miners’ demise in the postseason.

“Unfortunately, we lost,” she said. “It was not a good game. It was a very competitive game and, unfortunately, all of our girls did not play at their best and did not play together at their best. We had a few individual standouts.

“We just caused a lot of turnovers on ourselves. We rushed the ball too often, which didn’t let things work out for us.”

Hafets said once Bingham was able to get a few balls in the back of the net, her team, relatively young, had a hard time responding to the adversity on the big stage.

“We just kind of unraveled a little bit,” she said. “I think our girls lost some of their confidence during the game and felt a little panicked about creating opportunities. We did not play a good game, which is very disappointing.

“It just was not our evening.”

Hafets said going down soundly was a hard pill to swallow, and seeing the small, yet influential senior class leave the field with a loss was even worse.

“Just knowing you can’t really redeem yourself in another game,” Hafets said when asked what was most difficult. “It’s kind of like we have to wait ’til next year to wait and improve.

“It’s hardest on the seniors and I’m very proud of them. They made comments to the team after the game, reflecting on the season. Being in that moment and finally knowing what it means to move on.”

While the 2011 season is in the books, the future is bright for the program. The team which returned just five starters from the previous year has loads of young talent returning in every single class next year.

“It’s kind of interesting just reflecting on our season this last weekend.” Hafets said.

“It’s very exciting for the future, knowing this entire group of girls got the experience they needed. We did have a very young team this year, and for them to even get into playoffs and get that experience is huge.”
