University of Utah Geography student and Oklahoma native Joseph "Hance" Henrie, 20, died after he was ejected from a Nissan pickup truck Thursday when it swerved to miss a drunk driver going the wrong way on westbound I-80 and rolled.
The driver going eastbound on the westbound lane was Karen Gallegos of Wyoming. The truck swerved to miss her near Echo Junction a little before 8 p.m.
According to Corporal Todd Johnson with the Utah Highway Patrol, Gallegos continued less than a mile to the Travelle’s rest area, where she got back into the correct lane and continued driving passing the accident scene until a Summit County Deputy stopped her near Silver Creek Canyon 20 miles away.
The truck, driven by 20-year-old Hayley O’Brien, had two other passengers besides Henrie who were taken to Salt Lake-area hospitals.
Gallegos was booked into the Summit County Jail and charged with automobile homicide.
