The Park City Police Department last weekend conducted an aggressive round of traffic patrols, pulling drivers over at a rate of one every few minutes at some points.

The patrols were widespread, with some of the traffic stops on streets like Deer Valley Drive, Park Avenue and S.R. 224. Other drivers were pulled over on streets like Holiday Ranch Loop Road, Kearns Boulevard and Hillside Avenue.

Police Chief Wade Carpenter said the traffic patrols over the weekend were not part of a special operation and that officers have standing orders to conduct the patrols as part of their everyday duties. Carpenter attributed the number over the weekend to the crowds in Park City and the bad weather.

Some of the concentrations of traffic stops included:

  • nine in the period of just more than one hour starting at 2:45 p.m. on Sunday. Some of the drivers were pulled over on streets like Deer Valley Drive, Kearns Boulevard and S.R. 224.
  • eight over the span of 37 minutes starting at 2:07 p.m. on Sunday, with some of the stops on Park Avenue, Deer Valley Drive and S.R. 224.
  • five over the course of 22 minutes starting at 10:31 a.m. on Sunday. Some of the stops were in the vicinity of Marsac Avenue, Sandridge Avenue and Hillside Avenue. Others were on S.R. 224.
  • six over the course of 43 minutes starting at 8:54 p.m. on Saturday on S.R. 224, Main Street and Hillside Avenue

    Another of the concentrations included eight stops in the span of just more than an hour in the middle of the day on Sunday.

    There have been longstanding complaints by Parkites about the number of speeding drivers in Park City, and the Police Department regularly conducts patrols. The number of cases over the weekend, and the concentrations, seem unusual. Many of the people who are pulled over in Park City are warned instead of ticketed, the police contend.
