As the snow begins to melt, skiing, snowboarding and snowshoeing will quickly shift to soccer, softball and other outdoor springtime activities around Park City.

With the programs offered by local organizations such as Park City Recreation and Basin Recreation, those who wish to get their kids involved in spring activities can do so by a quick click of a mouse.

“It’s springtime. Everyone is so excited to get outside,” said Basin Recreation program director Brian Hanton. “They’re out doing everything they can.”

Hanton said while the winter months are traditionally focused on adult programs at Basin Recreation, the spring and summer months are flush with activities for local youths.

In late April, Basin Recreation will host a soccer academy indoors at the Basin Fieldhouse and will also have programs such as spring break camps in mid-April and a volleyball program will that begin a week after spring break.

“Kids-wise, we have quite a few (programs), especially with everyone itching to get outside,” Hanton said. “We want to give kids something to do besides playing video games.”

Karen Yocum, program coordinator for Park City Recreation, said people are already really eager to register.

Adult softball recreation signups began Friday and Yocum said she has already fielded a bevy of phone calls for those longing to get their names on the list.

Yocum said team spots for the popular adult softball league generally fill up well before the deadline. She added this year there will be a as many as eight teams in each softball league, which will help teams get more games in opposed to the past when teams would face many of the same teams throughout the course of a season.

Park City Recreation has a plethora of activities and programs for adults and kids this season.

Whether it be a class for a parent and child who want to learn to skateboard together, or a class for parents who want to teach soccer to their young children, or the brand-new youth kickball league, Yocum said there is a horde of outdoor activities offered in town.

“I’m ready to be warm,” she said. “And we are excited about the programs we have to offer and we will be busy. That’s for sure.”

Park City Recreation will be offering a spring soccer league for kids four years old up to fourth grade. There will also be a soccer match mix-up program for kids ages 11 to 15; the program involves an hour of skills challenges once a week followed by an organized game.

There will be an outdoor sand volleyball league for adults at City Park on Tuesday nights, which is equipped with outdoor lights.

Basin Recreation will be holding its third annual “Fun Run” during Memorial Day weekend and this year’s event will be focused on thanking those who serve. Hanton said policemen, firefighters or active servicemen will be allowed to participate in the race free.

“It’s in appreciation for what they do for us,” he said.
