In small businesses it’s common for each team member to wear multiple hats. One of those hats has to be “human resources” for handling hiring, writing company policies, handling complaints of harassment or injury and administering employee benefits and compensation.
Those are some really important tasks to be handled by someone without any expertise in them.
That’s why Parkite Casey Bailey White would like to offer her expertise. She runs the Utah division of HRHouston Group a firm that handles HR outsourcing and consulting.
“When people are passionate about the service they’re providing, they need a supporting cast that can bring the skills they lack,” White said. “They don’t know what they don’t know.”
She specializes in helping non-profit organizations and small businesses. Her client list currently includes the People’s Health Clinic, the National Ability Center, the Utah Nonprofits Association and the United Way of Northern Utah based in Ogden.
“I’m drawn to (nonprofits) because I’m helping people who are helping people,” she said. “They’re doing humanitarian aid, and I can help with HR.”
Her affordable rates also make her a perfect fit for these groups and small businesses, she said. She understands non-profit financing and accommodates that with options like small monthly rates instead of requiring a lump sum.
She can provide as much or as little as needed. Some clients just want help writing a handbook for company policies or on-call consulting for handling unexpected problems. Other clients outsource their full human resource needs to her firm.
State and federal laws regarding wages, benefits, leaves of absence, discrimination claims, hiring practices and other policies frequently change every four to five years. An agency can’t make these decisions once and stick to them for years and years, she said.
Yet an executive director, chief financial officer or office manager cannot be expected to stay on top of these complicated issues, White added.
“It’s overwhelming,” she said. “But you must treat all employees equally and fairly.”
If an agency believes they are doing a good job handling human resources but aren’t sure, HRHouston Group can do an audit, she said.
“To me, it’s innate. I comprehend it easily,” White added.
This line of work is in her blood. While growing up, White’s mother was vice president of human resources for AT&T. Trainings were often held in resort locations and she and her sister could attend if they sat through the meetings.
In this way she grew to see her mother as a successful, confident woman who helped people and made sure they were treated appropriately. When White went to college, choosing a major was easy, she said.
“We help people be successful in whatever role they’re in,” White said. “It’s people helping people.”
