A symbol of hope: a small brown basket.

As athletic director Doug Payne and assistant principal Dave McNaughtan walked along each side of the gym at Tuesday’s rivalry game between Park City and Wasatch, as parents, fans and students rummaged through their pockets for anything to put into the basket that would help.

For the second time in a month, the storied rivalry met in the middle.

Jan. 4, during a practice session, Wasatch wrestler Dale Lawrence sustained a serious neck injury that left him paralyzed. He has been unable to move his arms or legs since, but has felt some sensation in his limbs at times.

In both meetings this year, Park City and Wasatch fans have raised nearly $3,000 passing a basket at halftime of each game. On Tuesday, $1,468.85 was raised in about 10 minutes.

“It was a really great feeling,” Payne said. “It brought tears to my eyes. Seeing people just giving money people were digging out everything they had.”

Wasatch High School Vice Principal Jason Watt was impressed seeing what the rivalry has been able to produce for the sake of helping a family in dire need.

“It just gives you a little hope,” he said. “Seeing student bodies there for a purpose; at halftime, you’re all united for a cause. It’s just such a change in mindset.”

Watt said a benefit dinner-auction on Feb. 7 in Heber raised close to $60,000 in support of Lawrence and his family.

Payne and his two sons, both wrestlers, were in attendance. Having braved whiteout conditions on the road, Payne said he felt like he needed to be there. He purchased two t-“Super Dale” T-shirts for his sons.

“(Wasatch) has been extremely appreciative,” he said.

Park City High School Principal Hilary Hays teared up just thinking about it. She said anytime she talks to Wasatch Principal Paul Sweat about Lawrence, they both get emotional.

“It’s unbelievable community support,” she said. “Such an incredible statement about this rivalry. It was so cool to see these two crowds together.

“This is what needs to happen.”

Additional fundraisers are also in the works. On Feb. 23, a performing arts group will host a benefit concert at Wasatch High School. On March 19, there will be a “Run for Dale” 5K/10K race. All proceeds will be donated to the Lawrence family.
