City Hall has posted a poll seeking opinions about wintertime trails in the Park City area, an attempt to learn about where people head when the trails are covered with snow.

Heinrich Deters, the trails coordinator at City Hall, said upward of 300 people use the trails in Round Valley in the winter, and others select trails elsewhere in the Park City area during the winter.

He said there are approximately 43.5 miles of groomed wintertime trails between Park City and the Snyderville Basin. Four years ago, there were approximately 15.5 miles, he said, indicating most of the trail mileage at that time was on the White Pine Touring cross-country skiing track.

Grooming the trails in the winter creates more accessibility, with people of lesser ability able to use the groomed ones, Deters said. The groomed trails also attract people participating in different sorts of activities, with Deters mentioning cross-country skiers and dogsledders are drawn to groomed trails.

“That was a real goal for us — to open it up to different ability levels,” Deters said.

Where people use trails in the wintertime. Some of the choices include Empire Canyon, the Rail Trail and the White Pine Touring track.

Why people use the trails in the wintertime. Some of the choices include for recreational purposes, fitness training, walking a dog and for getting to and from work or other destinations.

What types of recreation people participate in using the trails in the wintertime. Some of the choices include walking or snowshoeing, cross-country skiing and running.

How people rate the wintertime trails in Round Valley, an expansive swath of open space on the edge of Park Meadows. The poll asks people to rate the signs in Round Valley and asks whether the acreage is “a place where you can ‘get away’ or seek solace.”

Whether wildlife sightings are important to people using the trails in the wintertime. Another question queries whether someone is aware coyotes inhabit Park City. There are questions about having pets on the trails as well.

The survey will be posted until Jan. 31. The results will be released to the public.
