Planners say they are expecting a large crowd so they have moved a public hearing about a controversial development proposal to the Ecker Hill International Middle School auditorium.
The public hearing is scheduled Jan. 4 at 7 p.m. The school is located at 2465 W. Kilby Road.
The proposal for 162 units includes 81 single-family homes, 69 townhouses and 12 duplexes near Kilby Road. The developer wants to rezone nearly 70 acres south of Interstate 80 near the Weilenmann School of Discovery.
Summit County planner Kimber Gabryszak said the property could be a suitable location for a major work force housing project. Some of the homes could be reserved for those earning less than 80 percent of the Snyderville Basin’s area median income, which is about $93,000 per year.
“It is appropriate in a lot of ways but there are still a number of issues that need to be worked out,” Gabryszak said in a telephone interview Tuesday. “It seemed like a good location for at least some type of affordable housing project.”
The development proposal has generated significant interest among neighbors.
Gabryszak said she expects many to attend Tuesday’s public hearing. But she said she does not expect members of the Snyderville Basin Planning Commission to make a decision that night.
Some members of the public complained several weeks ago about having to cram into a room at the Sheldon Richins Building for an opportunity to speak out about the proposal to the Basin Planning Commission.
“It’s on their radar and they are concerned about it They’re paying really close attention so we are trying to give them an additional opportunity to speak to the Planning Commission on the project,” Gabryszak said. “Having the meeting at the [Ecker Hill International Middle School] auditorium will provide more comfort for the public.”
The meeting was originally scheduled at the Sheldon Richins Building Jan. 11. The Basin Planning Commission meeting that was scheduled Jan. 11 has been cancelled.
