The Park City Council on Thursday agreed to allow a horse-drawn carriage on Main Street during the holiday season, an attraction that leaders on the street see as being a draw.
The carriage rides are scheduled to start at 3 p.m. on Saturday. They will be offered from approximately 3 p.m. until 10 p.m. through Dec. 29, with hours ending at 7 p.m. on Christmas eve. There will not be rides on Christmas.
The pickup spot is on 7th Street close to the Town Lift. The City Council allowed a route including Park Avenue, Heber Avenue, lower Main Street and 7th Street. It also includes the Main Street trolley turnaround.
The route could be extended to also include Main Street south to 5th Street and Swede Alley, depending on the horse’s ability to pull the carriage the longer distance.
Nobody testified prior to the City Council vote.
Mayor Dana Williams, though, questioned the effects on traffic, saying the carriage will be a “major impact” on traffic. City Councilwoman Candy Erickson, though, said the Anheuser-Busch Clydesdale horses were popular when they were in Park City during the 2002 Winter Olympics.
“Go for it,” Erickson said.
