On Wednesday, the Summit County Council is expected to support providing Recreation, Arts and Parks Tax grants to 19 non-profit organizations.
The groups are required to use the money to promote cultural events in the county. The grants recommended this year total about $748,304. Less than $600,000 was allocated last year.
“We are able to recommend higher grants for all applicants,” said Parkite Tom Fey, chairman of the RAP Tax Cultural Advisory Committee.
The revenue is generated by a 1/10-of-1-percent sales tax added to purchases in Summit County to help fund art, cultural and recreation programs. Voters first approved the countywide sales tax about a decade ago. In November, they voted to renew the tax for 10 more years.
In the past nine years, the RAP Tax in Summit County generated about $5.35 million for cultural organizations, Fey said.
“Darn near all of it stays in Summit County. It goes to programs that are only here, that are produced in Summit County,” Fey said.
