Jeff Wyant saw his team reach another overall milestone, but still left the 2010 Region 10 meet at Quinn’s Junction with some reservations.

The Park City High School cross-country team took first in both the boys’ and girls’ races as expected Wednesday, but the wear and tear of the late season could be taking a toll on a Miners’ team expecting to contend for the 3A state championship next Wednesday in Sugar House Park.

“We won both, but not as easy as we thought,” Wyant said.

Emily Schmidt took first place in the girls’ run, winning her first race of the season with a time of 19 minutes and 13 seconds. Of the final 13 runners to finish, 11 were Miners. Ali Walker came in second, while McKenzie Snyder came in third. Wyant said it was certainly a pleasant surprise to have one of his younger runners to beat out some of the better upperclassmen on his team.

“It was the first time ever for Emily,” Wyant said. “It certainly came at a good time.”

Finishing second in the boys’ race was Wasatch, with Carbon finishing second in the girls’ run.

Wyant mentioned that a few of his runners were sick, including star sophomore Ben Saarel, who still managed to take first despite feeling a bit under the weather, with a time of 16 minutes and 29 seconds.

“We had a few kids that were tired, a few that were sick, but we still pulled it off,” he said.

Five Park City boys’ runner placed in the top 10, with Matt Nagie coming in second, while Connor Gideon, Christian Orr and Ray Smith came in fifth, sixth and seventh.

Park City dominated Region 10 meets this year, and now has its sights set on the bigger fish at the state meet Wednesday. Wyant expects a serious challenge from a couple teams from the southern 3A regions.

He expects that Cedar City High School and Canyon View High School will be some of the biggest tests to his team and may stand in the way of the Miners’ earning a state title.

“To the teams in our region, they look at the region meet as their main race,” Wyant said. “We’re different. We always have our sights set on state.”

The Miners will now rest and prepare themselves mentally and physically for what adversities will come on the biggest stage.

“It (region) may have been a little bit of a wake-up call for some of our guys,” Wyant said. “It comes down to where does your focus lie, and where do you want to peak?”

As for the facing the best teams in the 3A?

“We’ll just have to go out there and beat them.”
