The Park City Board of Realtors has scheduled two classes designed for first-time homebuyers on Tuesday and Wednesday, with the classes likely of special interest to someone who is interested in buying into the work force housing pool.

The classes are scheduled:

Oct. 12 from 6 p.m. until 8 p.m.

Oct. 13 from noon until 2 p.m.

They will be taught at the Board of Realtors offices at 1889 Prospector Ave. and have been dubbed ‘Homeownership 101.’ The courses are free. Dinner is included on Oct. 12 and lunch will be served during the course the next day.

Brett Peretti, who works with a work force housing committee of the Board of Realtors, said some of the topics that will be covered include methods to build or repair credit ratings, work force housing opportunities and the process involved in purchasing a home.

Peretti said the course is conducted as a community service.

Scott Loomis, the executive director of Mountainlands Community Housing Trust

Rick Klein, a mortgage banker with Wells Fargo based in Park City

Richard Lee, a Park City-based mortgage banker with a firm known as Prime Lending

Jessica Allen, who works with the Board of Realtors’ work force housing committee

Peretti said classes held in 2009, the first time they were offered, drew approximately 70 people over the course of two classes. He said he hopes this year’s classes at least match the attendance in 2009.

City Hall and other groups like the housing trust have long championed the idea of offering work force housing opportunities inside Park City to people who otherwise would be priced out of the city’s resort-driven real estate market, the most expensive in the state.

The supporters say doing so brings economic diversity to Park City and cuts traffic since more people are able to live close to where they work. City Hall recently finished the Snow Creek Cottages work force housing development outside the Park Avenue police station, the local government’s most ambitious brick-and-mortar housing project.
