In the first annual Park City Invitational high school golf tournament Thursday, the Miners invited a few schools to come and join in on the fun.

Too bad for their guests that the Miners did what they normally do: shoot well, dominate and win.

The Miners participated in the tournament with fellow 3A school Wasatch, 4A Uintah and 5A Riverton, after Timpanogos was a late scratch.

Park City took first overall at the tournament held at Park Meadows Golf Course with a combined score of 299. Six Miners participated in the event and four of the top six scores came from the Park City team. Park City won by a combined 24 strokes. Wasatch finished second with a combined 323, with Uintah and Riverton both at 344 following behind.

Head coach George Murphy was pleased, to say the least.

“We had a solid effort by every player,” he said.

It was one of the longest courses the team has played all season, but Murphy knows it was the perfect kind of warmup for what looms this weekend down south.

The Miners meet up with their old 3A rival, Dixie High School, for a head-to-head match that will be played at the course where the 3A state championship will be held later on this month. Although Dixie is now 4A, it will be looking to beat its former counterpart.

“There’s a rivalry there, sure,” Murphy deadpanned.

Leading the way for Park City Thursday was senior Michael Coopman, who shot an even par 72 on the afternoon. Senior Brian Schwerin followed with a 75, with sophomore Justin Shluker shooting a 76. Evan Fleming (76), Jack Egan (81) and Andrew Method (82) rounded out the Park City players’ scores on the afternoon.

Murphy’s stance heading into the next few weeks is to keep his team as fresh as possible. Tournaments like this will only help his team down the road. Murphy also mentioned that Park City would be looking to participate in a couple more friendly matches before heading to the state championship on Oct. 18.

“We would like to thank Park Meadows for hosting one of our first non-region tournaments,” Murphy said. “It was a perfect day for golf, and Park City was ready for the challenge from teams in the 3A, 4A and 5A classification.”

As for this weekend, Murphy knows that his guys will be ready, and that a matchup like this will be a measuring stick for his golfers.

“Six players will travel to St. George in the morning to play a head-to-head match with Dixie at the state site,” he said. “It will be a good test to see where we stand heading into state.”
