Mayor Dana Williams on Saturday made a rare pair of endorsements on Saturday, telling a crowd in Old Town he is supporting the Democratic candidates for the governor’s office and the Senate. Speaking to a gathering of the Women’s Democratic Club of Utah at High West Distillery, Williams said he backed Peter Corroon’s gubernatorial campaign and the Senate bid by Sam Granato. The two candidates were present to hear the endorsements. Williams praised Corroon’s support for environmental initiatives to combat a changing climate and said his opponent, Gov. Gary Herbert, has not shown leadership in that field. Williams also mentioned he sees Corroon as being more fiscally responsible than the incumbent. Meanwhile, Williams panned the campaign of Mike Lee, who is the Republican seeking a spot in the Senate and Granato’s opponent on Election Day. He said Lee "is just not acceptable." Lee is a conservative who wants to succeed Sen. Bob Bennett. "It made me miss Bob Bennett," Williams said as he described hearing about Lee’s platform. Williams holds a nonpartisan political position, but he generally supports a platform that aligns him closely with the Democratic Party. The three-term mayor, though, typically does not formally endorse candidates.
