The Park City Police Department arrested a man on Tuesday on charges that he broke into his ex-girlfriend’s apartment and sexually assaulted her.
Prosecutors on Thursday filed three charges against the man:
The formal charges filed by the prosecutors are less serious than the initial ones the police brought against the man.
The police initially filed charges of aggravated sexual assault, aggravated burglary and aggravated kidnapping, each a first-degree felony punishable by a prison sentence of between five years and life and a $10,000 fine upon conviction.
The most serious of the formal charges brought by prosecutors is punishable by a prison sentence of between 1 and 15 years and a fine of $10,000.
The man is 25 years old and lives in the Iron Horse neighborhood.
The Summit County Jail said bail is set at $75,000, but federal immigration officials have ordered the man held.
According to the Police Department, officers were called to the Peace House, a shelter for victims of domestic violence, on Tuesday to take the report.
The 25-year-old woman told investigators the man is her former boyfriend and broke into the apartment at 6 a.m. on Monday, the police said. Phil Kirk, a police captain, said the two had broken up a few months ago.
Officers investigating the case found the man later on Tuesday in his residence and arrested him without incident, the police said.
The woman suffered minor injuries in the confrontation, the police said. Details about the injuries were not released.
Kirk said the investigation is continuing. He said the police plan to conduct further interviews with the man and the woman.
