While seeing her team clawing back against its rival, senior defender Bethany Kanten lost her footing. She lay on the pitch, helpless, as a Wasatch forward went barreling toward sophomore goalkeeper Skye Mooney.

Mooney picked her teammate up with a phenomenal one-on-one save.

A few minutes later, Kanten returned the favor in epic fashion.

Kanten nailed a 45-yard free kick that soared over the head of the helpless Wasatch goalkeeper to knot things up at 2-2 after the Miners had faced a 2-0 halftime deficit.

The second-half assault on Wasatch continued late as freshman Jessica Dancy, whose blistering pace bothered the Wasps the entire second half, was taken down in the corner of the box. Park City was awarded a penalty kick.

Freshman forward Maggie Reigelsberger, who had a pair of goals on the afternoon, buried the penalty kick into the left side of the net as the improbable comeback by the Park City High School girls’ soccer team came to fruition, 3-2 Tuesday afternoon.

After the match, Kanten mentioned she was a bit hesitant to take the shot, even considering she has scored twice from that distance against Wasatch in the past.

“I asked my right back if I should shoot it or cross it, and she just said shoot,” Kanten said.

Asked if her exceptional goal helped calm her nerves after falling down and relying on Mooney to help her out, Kanten said, “Yeah, definitely.”

The first half turned into a torrential downpour as the North 40 Field was pelted with hard rain. Wasatch was able to capitalize with two superb goals from Anne Fitzgerald, but Park City head coach Chip Cook knew her team still had plenty of fight.

“I was very pleased with the way we played the first half. I thought we played great,” Cook said. “Wasatch got two opportunities to score and they were perfectly shot balls. Not many goalkeepers in the world can save those shots.

“We gave them the opportunities to shoot in the first place,” Cook said. “But we weren’t panicked at all.”

The Miners picked up the offensive pressure once the sun peaked through the clouds at the start of the second half.

Reigelsberger got Park City on the score sheet first with an impressive goal early in the second half. The freshman took on a couple defenders and rifled an off-balance shot that flew past the Wasatch keeper and into the back of the net.

Cook doled out compliments to some of her players young players.

“Skye made an amazing save,” Cook said.

“Maggie, just being a freshman, played really well,” she added.

Being down 2-0 on your own pitch against your rival isn’t a very ideal situation, but the Miners proved they are as resilient as a team can be at this point in the season.

“One of the trademarks of our team is that we never give up,” Cook said. “I just told them to go out and continue to do what you’ve been doing the whole game and it’s going to happen for you, and sure enough it did.”

Miners roll past Union, 4-0 Thursday

There wouldn’t be a lapse of energy or focus after a dramatic come-from-behind victory against Wasatch for the Miners. Maggie Reigelsberger notched two goals on the afternoon. Fellow freshman Jessica Dancy and senior Julia Kranstover added a goal a piece in Park City’s 4-0 victory over visiting Union.

Reigelsberger leads the team in goals scored with seven on the season, with Kranstover in second with five.

Park City is now 6-3-2 on the season and sits atop Region 10 play with a record of 4-0. The Miners have outscored region rivals 24-2 in four matches this season.

The Miners haven’t lost a match since their Aug. 19 loss to 5A Lone Peak in overtime. Park City has won five of its last six matches and is currently on a four-match winning streak.
