Military officials might soon break ground on a major commercial development in the Park City area.

The Military Installation Development Authority is scheduled to hold a meeting at the Sheldon Richins Building to discuss the development proposal with the public. The agency is charged with helping facilitate the development of military lands in Utah. The meeting is scheduled Sept. 14 at 6 p.m. Residents interested in learning more about the military’s plans for building a hotel in Wasatch County and shopping center in the Park City area are encouraged to attend.

The development, which would provide room discounts to servicemen and women, has been discussed for several years.

The hotel is slated to be built near the Jordanelle Reservoir in Wasatch County, and the latest plan involves taking tax revenue from a new commercial center military officials would develop near Silver Creek to help offset the costs of subsidizing room rates for the armed forces.

The commercial center could be built on property near The Home Depot, owned jointly by Park City and Summit County. MIDA has selected builder John Liljenquist to oversee the development.

“[Liljenquist] has done commercial projects in California and Utah,” MIDA Chairman Stuart Adams said.

Meanwhile, officials say a big-box retailer could be the anchor tenant at the proposed commercial center in Silver Creek.

Several companies have been discussed, but it was unclear on Friday whether Costco is planning a store in the Snyderville Basin.

“We will know one day,” Adams said. “That’s a discussion that we will have.”

The state Legislature granted land-use authority to MIDA, meaning the organization could build in Summit County without permits from local officials.

But MIDA has worked with Park City and the county, Adams explained.

“MIDA could have located a hotel anywhere in Summit County. The Legislature gave us the ability to locate that hotel anywhere we wanted to,” Adams said. “Eventually, what we hope to end up with is a compromise.”

MIDA will not present a specific plan for the military hotel or commercial center at Tuesday’s meeting.

“We’ve talked about it a lot and there has been a lot of work done but we really haven’t formally taken a position on it,” Adams said.
