Flags in the Park City area will fly at half-staff today as emergency responders pay tribute to those who died in the attacks on Sept. 11.
“At each station we’re going to bring t he flag down to half-mast for about five minutes and then we’re going to bring it back up,” said Bob Zanetti, an assistant chief for the Park City Fire District. “We’re not doing anything huge. We’re just doing what we feel is good to honor.”
Hundreds of emergency responders died when terrorists attacked the United States on Sept. 11, 2001.
At about 8 a.m. on Saturday, firefighters in Park City will observe about five minutes of silent reflection to honor the victims of the attacks, according to Park City Fire District Battalion Chief Bob Evans.
The public is welcome to attend the ceremonies at the fire stations, Evans said.
“Every firefighter remembers where they were and what they were doing nine years ago on Sept. 11. Every firefighter knew when these towers went down there were firefighters in there,” Evans said. “We knew what they were doing; we knew what equipment was in their hand. There is a connection probably more so in firefighting than most occupations. There is a brotherhood.”
Park City Police Chief Wade Carpenter said some of his officers expect to join the firefighters on Saturday in recognizing their fallen “brothers and sisters.”
