Typically, winning a golf tournament by 28 strokes is a good thing. For the Park City High School golf team, it still is.

The Miners followed up on their 2010 season kickoff in Price last week by finishing with a match-best 307 at home Thursday. Wasatch was the closest, coming in at 335, while Union took third, shooting a combined 340.

Head coach George Murphy knew that, this being the only home tourney of the season, his team would have a decent handle on the tough course that is Park City Golf Course.

“It’s a tough course, for sure.” Murphy said. “It’s a pretty tight course to play.”

While the initial home tournament was rained out two weeks ago, the weather on the course couldn’t have been more pristine Thursday afternoon.

Murphy praised his team’s depth and tenacity to want to get better as a unit.

“We’ve got a deep team,” he said. “One through eight can score low. They all want to play. They all want to be the low guy.”

Tournament scorig uses the top four highest scorers on each team that consists of eight golfers. Leading the way Thursday was Matt Vanleeuwen, who shot a team-high 74 (+2). Following Vanleeuwen were Justin Shluker 75 (+3), Michael Coopman 78 (+6) and Ryan Kearns 80 (+8).

A senior, Coopman was fairly content with the way he played, but was glad his team was able to perform with such depth.

“The course played all right for me today,” Coopman said. “This is our home course, I enjoyed it, if I could just keep the ball in the fairway. Our team is awesome, even some of our JV shot well.”

Fellow senior Kearns said he didn’t play as well as he would have liked a week after shooting a tournament-high 73 in Price. , but typically he struggles at this course.

“I played all right, pretty solid, a lot of pars, one birdie and then just had a couple blow-up holes,” Kearns said. “I play this course all the time, but I never play good in this tournament. I don’t know why.

Murphy and the Miners take their 36-stroke lead in region play into next week, where they’ll head to Roosevelt next Thursday.

Although the cushion is now fairly comfortable for Park City, Murphy said that the region is gaining balance..

“The competition is a little closer in the last three years,” he said, but added: “Most teams struggle to get four solid scores.”

The Miners don’t seem to have that problem.
