David Wiener has a tough time explaining what he does for a living. The short answer is he makes really cool stuff.

“I studied art and engineering,” he explained. “After 25 or more years I still don’t know what to call myself What’s unique about what we do is we combine all the creative talents to really create integrative programs for our products.”

His current business, the David Wiener Collection, designs and sells audio products. He recently made a deal with Ferrari to sponsor a line. He designs speakers and they make sports cars, but the two companies have a lot in common, he said.

“Our cultures are so similar we make ultra-performing products with timeless designs and finishes,” he said.

A Ferrari is exotic and unique with finishes “people just aren’t use to.” That also perfectly describes his audio equipment, he said.

Winter Olympics star Apolo Ohno seems to think so. He’s a huge fan, Wiener said, and last month agreed to be a “product ambassador” for him.

Wiener’s relationship with Ferrari goes back to when he designed engines for their race cars. Later he continued to rub shoulders with people in the company as he consulted Formula 1 teams on their designs and branding. Additionally, Wiener said he’s advised numerous large corporations and athletic franchises including the USSA.

So is he an engineer or a designer? Is he focused on performance or aesthetics? Both, Wiener said; he loves to be innovative in both areas. He also sews, writes copy, photographs and does anything else needed. He has a vision for what can be, he said, and won’t contract out to people who aren’t committed to the vision.

Many of his early years were spent in the automobile and motor sports industries. As an avid music lover, he also thought he could improve on existing sound systems. First he started Soundtube Entertainment in Park City and then sold it.

Now he’s promoting The David Wiener Collection. Previously, his goal was to create really innovative sound systems and bring concert-level technology into homes and offices.

Now his goal is shock and awe.

“I wanted to build really extraordinary audio and entertainment products things people will drool over, things everyone will want,” he said.

Quite simply, his products enhance the musical experience, he said. Modern methods of recording, delivering and playing music distort the digital files. His products return the sound to its original glory, he said. The collection includes stereos for homes and offices as well as sound systems for iPods and even for the insides of electric guitars.

They’re also expensive and in limited quantity, he added. Next, he would like to bring that same quality to “the masses.” He’s looking for investors to help grow the company.

“Our technology brings music back to life; it’s a major feature of every product we make,” he said. “It’s very exciting for people to experience our audio enhancement technology.”

And Wiener guarantees people will like the way it looks. The products are machined out of raw aluminum right here in Utah. His offices in Salt Lake City and Park City create every unit from scratch and ship it out from the Beehive State.
