There were no fatalities when a Coast Guard helicopter with five people aboard crashed Wednesday morning in the Uinta Mountains, a spokesman for the Coast Guard said.

The helicopter went down in the Silver Meadow area of Wasatch County near State Road 35, the authorities said.

Summit County Sheriff’s Office spokesman Ron Bridge said dispatchers received a report of the crash at about 10:30 a.m.

The Coast Guard crew was returning to Elizabeth City, N.C., after helping provide security at the Vancouver Olympics, Coast Guard spokesman Carlos Diaz said in a telephone interview.

Searchers approached the remote crash site Wednesday on snowmobiles.

Two of the most critically injured people were taken to University Hospital on a second Coast Guard helicopter, which was flying with the other chopper at the time of the crash. The helicopters had made a refueling stop in Salt Lake City.

“I don’t, at this time, know what happened,” Wasatch County Sheriff’s Office Sgt. Jeremy Hales said about the cause of the crash.

A medical helicopter was dispatched to the scene of the crash to pick up one person and transport them to the Park City Medical Center, Hales said. The patient was later taken from Park City to a hospital in Salt Lake City.

The other two people who were aboard the helicopter were taken out of the forest on snowmobiles by search-and-rescue volunteers, Hales said. Those two patients were treated at Park City Medical Center Wednesday and released, a hospital spokeswoman said.

The Coast Guard said Cdr. Patrick Shaw, 37, Juneau, Alaska, suffered internal injuries; Lt. Cmdr. Steven Cerveny, 40, Lincoln, Neb., had a broken leg; and Petty Officer 2nd Class Gina Panuzzi, 31, Lacey Thurston, Wash., also had internal injuries. Panuzzi underwent surgery and remained in critical condition, along with Shaw, according to Ryann Rasmussen, a hospital spokeswoman. Cerveny was listed in serious condition.

The two others aboard the helicopter were Petty Officer 3rd Class Darren Hicks, 22, Oroville, Wash.; and Petty Officer 3rd Class Edward Sychra, 26, Blanchard, Ind., according to the Coast Guard.
