The Summit County Council has named a new chairperson. Summit County Councilwoman Claudia McMullin was chosen to replace Councilman John Hanrahan in the influential post.
“I think that John did an excellent job as chair,” Summit County Councilman Chris Robinson said at a Jan. 6 meeting in Coalville.
As chairwoman, McMullin, who was elected to the County Council to serve four years in 2008, will conduct meetings and have the power to steer discussions. Hanrahan served in the post for the past year.
Robinson, who was elected to a two-year County Council term in 2008, was appointed vice chairman last week.
The chairperson is responsible for keeping councilpersons “on task,” Hanrahan said in an interview following Wednesday’s meeting.
“Which is hard to do,” Hanrahan joked.
McMullin is a Democrat who moved to the West Side of Summit County from New York City in 1997. She left behind a career as a corporate lawyer on the East Coast when she moved.
McMullin served a term on the Snyderville Basin Planning Commission before she was elected to the County Council.
Meanwhile, Robinson is also a Democrat. He lives in the Snyderville Basin and is chief executive officer of The Ensign Group development firm.
