Summit County Treasurer Glen Thompson has announced that Division of Motor Vehicles offices in Coalville and the Park City area will soon be open five days a week to better serve the needs of citizens.

Beginning next February, Thompson said, he expects the hours the offices are open to change to Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. The offices are currently open Monday through Thursday from 7:00 a.m. to 5:30 p.m.

The department is where you receive license plates, pay taxes and register property like cars, boats, campers or all terrain vehicles.

Because the Division of Motor Vehicles is a state function the office shifted to a four-day week about a year ago when other state employees began working four 10-hour shifts.

“We decided there would not be any support for computers or for problems, so the county decided to stay with the state on DMV hours,” said Thompson, who oversees the DMV in Summit County.

But next year the Division of Motor Vehicles office in Draper is scheduled to reopen on Fridays.

“What that does is it gives more support to the counties that could go back to 8 to 5,” Thompson explained. “We’re anticipating we’ll be getting that support at the end of January or first of February.”

The closing of the Division of Motor Vehicles on Fridays angered some people in Summit County.

“I didn’t feel there was any harm in going back to providing that service on Friday because there are a lot of people who prefer us to be open,” Thompson said. “It makes it, I feel, more convenient for the customers.”

Still, some DMV employees are against the change.

The four-day work week has served the department well, Division of Motor Vehicles employee Jeannine Broberg said.

“We feel the four 10s is the best for our office,” Broberg said.

With Division of Motor Vehicles offices in Salt Lake County closed on Fridays, “we’re concerned the overflow from Salt Lake County will affect our office as far as the lines,” Broberg said.

She said on Fridays customers would overrun Summit County from counties where the Division of Motor Vehicles is closed.
