A swap of an edgier kind is coming to swap-loving Park City.
Don’t look for any fluffy snow gear or a kid’s trike on Saturday, April 4, at Summit Honda. This swap is a little different.
The local dealer decided it was high time to offer a swap for the rest of the recreation-lovers in the area. According to sales manager Rachel Young, a customer came into the dealership one day complaining about all of the gently-used gear that her son had grown out of that was piling up at her house. Young figured that a lot of people probably had a similar problem and decided that a swap might be a great way for people to get rid of some stuff and find some new gear in the process.
“With our economy the way it is, why not have a big old redneck gear swap in the parking lot,” Young laughed.
The swap will welcome gear of all sorts, including apparel and accessories for dirt bikes, scooters, street bikes and watercraft of all kinds. That might mean helmets, gloves or boots as well as more obscure items like tailpipes, fire extinguishers and life jackets.
Young said that they are even open to selling machines as long as the sellers and buyers do all of the paperwork.
Sellers will have two options: They can either set up a table yard-sale style or work out a deal with Summit Honda to have it sold with a small commission charged.
Summit Honda will be quite liberal with the interpretation of “table.” Young said. People can sell out of the backs of their pickups or any other way that they want to display their wares. She said that the staff will also be on hand to help sellers price their items. Sellers will not be charged to set up a table and will be able to keep 100 percent of their profits.
“It’s going to be very low effort,” she said.
For those unable to make it on Saturday, Summit Honda will allow people to drop off their gear by 5 p.m. Friday to be sold by the staff on Saturday. Summit Honda will charge a 15-percent commission and then issue the sellers a check or gift card after the swap.
Young is hoping that the swap will be more than just a marketplace. She is encouraging people to trade gear with other sellers as well as just get to meet other people with similar interests.
“A lot of people in the dirt-bike world don’t get to know each other,” she said.
It will also offer people a chance to check out all of the new equipment that Summit Honda has to offer.
Young said that since the store starting talking about the swap, the response has been amazing. Many people said that an event like this has been needed in the community. Thus far, the dealership hasn’t done any advertising, yet the phone at the store is ringing off the hook.
Young is also very excited about the food that will be available at the swap. A lunch of chili dogs, chips and a soda will be available for a donation of $5 to benefit the Pediatric Brain Tumor Foundation’s Ride for Kids. The annual motorcycle ride, which takes place Aug. 22 this year, starts in the Salt Lake Valley and winds through East Canyon. Summit Honda has been a part of the charity for five years now and Young said the company is committed to putting as much of its time and effort as possible in that direction.
The swap will take place from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. in the parking lot at Summit Honda, 6407 North Business Park Loop. Sellers should bring a table and chairs, as well as money to make change. For those dropping off gear to be sold by Summit Honda, all equipment must be at the dealership by 5 p.m. Friday and picked up by 5 p.m. Tuesday after the swap.
