While Park City head coach Howard Hoyt was quick to point out that it is not indicative of the rest of the season, it sure felt good to come home as champions after the Richfield Tournament this weekend.
In just three games in two days, the Miners amassed an eye-popping 64 runs, 51 hits, 26 singles, 15 doubles and six home runs.
Words that come to mind are ‘hitting clinic,” Park City head coach Howard Hoyt said.
Its not that the Miners aren’t very good this year — in fact, they are stacked with talent –but this may have been their easiest on a road to the championships that could be very challenging. Still, Hoyt was very pleased at the boys’ performance and is hoping to apply the resulting confidence to future games.
“These results are not even close to what I’m expecting the rest of the season,” Hoyt said.
In the Miners’ first game on Friday, they pounded Millard 22-3, with Scott Neuenschwander and Parker Morin both getting home runs. In the next game, the Miners beat host Richfield 18-6 with home runs from Morin and David Feasler. In the championship game on Saturday, the Miners had their toughest game against North Sanpete, but still won easily, 11-6. Morin brought his home-run total to three in the final game and Neuenschwander added one more as well.
“We’re moving up the ladder,” Hoyt said.
The Miners will have a more challenging tournament this weekend in Gunnison, where most of the teams they face will be 4A one classification higher than Park City. Hoyt said that this weekend the team was able to establish a more solid rotation of starter and should be ready for the test over the weekend.
The Miners will be back within reasonable driving distance next week when they face West on the road in Salt lake on Monday, March 23 at 3:30 p.m.
