A Snyderville Basin woman in her mid-50s was found dead Friday in the forest east of Kamas.
“I was the first person on that and I did CPR on her for 20 minutes,” said Darren Schiedel, a U.S. Forest Service law enforcement officer.
The woman was found in a vehicle near the Mirror Lake Highway about seven miles east of Kamas, Summit County Sheriff Dave Edmunds said, adding that she likely died at the scene.
The woman was recently diagnosed with a fatal disease, Edmunds said.
X-mas tree thieves in the forest
A law enforcement officer in the Uinta-Wasatch-Cache National Forest warns would-be Christmas tree thieves that harvesting evergreens in the Kamas Ranger District is against the law.
“It’s a $200 fine,” said Darren Schiedel, a U.S. Forest Service law enforcement officer.
Permits can still be obtained for harvesting Christmas trees in the Mountain View or Evanston Ranger District near the Wyoming state line, he explained.
“I’ve stopped a lot of people just as they were getting out of their truck,” Schiedel said. “They were in the wrong area and had to drive 20 miles north.”
Until Christmas he will watch carefully for tree thieves east of Kamas.
“The (Kamas) district has decided that they are not going to issue permits, partly because this is such a high-use district,” Schiedel said, adding that vehicles with trees can be stopped. “So far people are coming over from the Evanston side.”
A bark beetle epidemic that results in the death of many pine trees in the forest also forced the ban on permits in Kamas, he said.
“All the way up until Christmas we will tell folks go get a permit,” Schiedel said.

Interviews for a new judge
Summit County Justice Court Judge Lynn Sadler has submitted his resignation and interviews for his replacement were slated to begin Wednesday.
“We’re kind of under a time constraint here,” deputy Summit County attorney David Thomas said.
Sadler’s resignation takes effect Feb. 1, 2008.
“This is a very significant appointment,” said Summit County Commissioner Bob Richer.
Applicants scheduled to be interviewed for the post include Linda S. King, Susan Bradshaw, Marea A. Doherty, Brenda L. Teig, Dennis Wong, K. Daniel Lau, Shauna L. Kerr and David E. Rosenblum.
