Summit County and City Hall would use 107 acres of land east of U.S. 40 for a public works facility if a $4.5 million deal is finalized in December.
A real-estate arm of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints currently owns property south of Promontory which the governmental entities expect to purchase from The Boyer Company.
Park City and Summit County will each contribute $2.25 million from general funds to buy the land, Summit County Commissioner Bob Richer explained.
“[Public Works] has to go somewhere and this is a good central location because I think a lot of the future growth will be in the Silver Creek area,” Richer said.
Rezoning the land for an industrial facility would require about 40 percent of the property stay open space, he said.
“The county and the city intend very much to have a public works area that the citizens are proud of,” Richer said.
The LDS Church intends to construct a meeting house on about five acres adjacent to the site, which is located southeast of a Utah Department of Transportation shed near Silver Creek, he said.
Meanwhile, City Hall and the county will not need new public works space in the Basin for about a decade, Richer stressed.
Richer expected the purchase to close in December.
“We’re all real excited about it and I think it’s a major acquisition and another major accomplishment,” he said.
