A hearing that could ultimately help stop the sale of The Canyons resort to Toronto-based Talisker Corp. could be rescheduled in October.
The hearing on a motion for preliminary injunction filed by Vail Resorts Inc. was cancelled Sept. 20 when the original judge in the case recused himself because his wife had worked for a law firm that represented Vail.
Officials at Vail Resorts challenged the sale of The Canyons claiming they were close to closing a deal to purchase the resort from its parent company, American Skiing Co., when Talisker and the Peninsula Advisors investment firm conspired to scuttle the deal. Defendants named in the case include Talisker, Peninsula Advisors and American Skiing Company.
Black bear is put down
A wildlife officer shot and killed a black bear near the Mirror Lake Highway that had damaged a car and repeatedly visited campgrounds in the Uinta Mountains east of Kamas.
The large, older bear was destroyed at Mirror Lake in September when officers came upon it in the woods after they had attempted to “severely haze” the animal, to convince it to leave the area.
Give a hoot
Utah Department of Transportation officials do not do enough to keep highways in Summit County clean, Snyderville Basin resident Greg Voth said.
“We are relying on UDOT for I-80, [State Roads] 224, 248 and U.S. 40,” Voth told the Snyderville Basin Planning Commission. “I think this beautiful place is really at risk.”
Voth said he has recently seen “a hell of a lot of trash” while riding his road bike in western Summit County.
“I just wanted to alert you to this,” Voth told planning commissioners. “It’s a problem that is just going to get worse and worse.”
