It was a grand opening of sorts Friday night for the remodeled, yet still under construction, Dozier Field, but it wasn’t a party for the Miners football team, who fell 14-7 to Salem Hills.

Park City took an early lead on a first quarter touchdown rush from senior quarterback Josh Hofer, which it held until the final seconds of the first half, when Salem Hills took a fumble 75 yards forward to the end zone. That score put Salem Hills right back in the game, and a late third quarter lengthy touchdown pass was enough for the visitors to hold onto for the win.

“We should have won the game,” Miners Head Coach Dennis Cunningham said. “We didn’t execute. So we have just got to get better.”

Park City is 1-4 and will travel to face Provo at 7 p.m. next Friday.

“It’ll be interesting to see what happens this year,” said Parkite and contractor Alan Hoeksema about the new field. “But we’ll be able to sit in nice new stands. … I’m sure the contractor is really happy about holding the event here tonight.”

As has become usual this season, the Miners girls soccer team easily dispatched another opponent in Juan Diego Catholic Thursday, winning 6-0. 

A 2-0 lead taken into halftime by Park City allowed the team to play 22 of its players in the win. The Miners saw all six of their goals scored by six different players. Goalscorer Elsa Dellenbach led the team with two assists. 

The win was Park City’s eighth-straight. In this winning streak, the Miners have outscored opponents 49-1. 

Ranked third in 4A, Park City is working to perfect their craft ahead of October’s playoffs. They have seven regular season games left, including Sept. 24 senior night against Murray. They plan to host the game at the remodeled Dozier Field, which is opening during later construction stages for Friday night’s Miners football game. 

“Last night was a good representation of what we’re capable of,” Miners Head Coach Anthony DiCicco said. “Our depth is certainly a strength of ours. … We have so many players who are a threat on any given day.”

DiCicco said his team has been playing so well rounded he couldn’t come up with an immediate answer when recently asked by a ref who their leading scorer is. That player is junior Ashtyn Holder with nine goals, though Holder is one of five Park City players with five or more goals this season. 

DiCicco said Holder was one of a few junior varsity players last season who got playing time on varsity. He likes to offer such opportunities so these players are ready to step up if needed in the playoffs.

The Miners will have a perfect opportunity to spread the ball around again at 3:30 p.m. Monday when they travel to face Cottonwood. They will face a combination junior varsity and varsity team against Cottonwood, who doesn’t have a junior varsity team this season. Park City defeated Cottonwood 9-0 doing the same thing Aug. 27. 

“It will actually be an entirely different squad than saw them the first time,” DiCicco said. “And so that comes with its own unique challenges: a group that hasn’t together quite as much has to come together on the fly and problem solve, and Cottonwood is not the easiest place to go play. We know we’ll be the better team, we just have to go execute.”

Aside from working in those younger players, DiCicco believes his team can continue to work on breaking other team’s rhythms and finishing in front of the opposing nets down the final stretch of the season. He said they constantly work on these things in practice and in games. DiCicco believes the Miners’ strongest opponent and best challenge can often be themselves in practice. 

With the playoffs having been paired down from 24 to 16 teams this season, there will be less margin for error for Park City. They will need to hit the ground running against what could be more battled tested teams from other parts of Utah. 

“The St. George, Provo and Northern regions are regions where you get teams that maybe don’t have records that are as good as ours but are very much battle tested because of the quality of some of the opposition that they’re seeing throughout the regular season,” DiCicco said. “One thing about this group that’s been true over these last several years is that they are up for it. They don’t take teams lightly, and their focus is on themselves and being the best version of ourselves that we can be.”

DiCicco said crowd support has been strong thus far at their home games in Quinn’s Junction. They’d certainly appreciate further support as they work toward playoffs.

The Miners girls volleyball team took down East on Thursday by three sets to none. Park City dominated sets one and two, winning them 25-9 and 25-10, respectively, and squeaked out set three 25-23. The Miners are 6-4 and will next face Highland at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday on the road.

The Miners girls tennis team defeated Jordan Thursday by five matches to none. Park City scored wins at three singles and two doubles spots. The Miners are 3-3 and will next take on Judge Memorial Catholic at 3:30 p.m. Tuesday on the road. 

Wasatch High School

The Wasatch girls soccer team fell to Provo 2-1 Thursday. The Wasps scored the game’s only first-half goal, then conceded two goals in the second half. Wasatch is 8-4 and will next take on Mountain View at 7 p.m. Tuesday at home.

The Wasatch girls volleyball team fell to Skyridge Thursday by three sets to none. The Wasps lost set one 25-14, set two 25-8 and set three 25-21. Wasatch is 7-5 and will next face Summit Academy at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday at home.

The Wasatch girls tennis team fell to Timpanogos Wednesday by seven matches to none. The Wasps lost four singles and three doubles matches. Wasatch is 7-7 in dual matches and will face Uintah at 3:30 p.m. Tuesday at home. 

Deer Creek High School

The Deer Creek girls soccer team fell to Mountain View 6-2 Thursday. The Riverhawks scored both of their two goals in the second half of the loss. Deer Creek is 2-9 and will  next face Timpanogos at 7 p.m. Tuesday at home.

The Deer Creek girls volleyball team fell Thursday to Maple Mountain by three sets to none. The Riverahawks lost the first set 25-16, the second 25-10 and the third 25-21. Deer Creek is 1-12 and will take on Orem at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday at home. 

South Summit High School

The South Summit football team defeated South Sevier last Friday 43-7. Quarterback Ian Mair led the Wildcats with three touchdowns (two passing and one rushing) in the win. South Summit is 3-1 heading into the San Juan game at 7 p.m. this Friday. The Wildcats fell to San Juan in last season’s state title game. 

The South Summit girls soccer team took down rival North Summit 5-1 Thursday. The Wildcats scored three goals in the first half and two in the second half of the win. South Summit is 4-5 and will next take on American Leadership Academy at 4 p.m. Monday at home.

The South Summit girls volleyball team fell to Union Thursday by three sets to none. The Wildcats dropped the first set 25-12, the second 25-14 and the third 25-11. South Summit is 4-8 and will next face Millard at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday at home.

North Summit High School

The North Summit football team dominated Parowan last Friday 45-0. Quarterback Cru Richins led the Braves with three touchdowns (two passing and one receiving) in the win. North Summit is 3-1 and will take on Kanab at 7 p.m. this Friday on the road. 

The North Summit girls soccer team fell to rival South Summit 5-1 Thursday. The Braves are 1-6 and will next face St. Joseph at 4 p.m. Tuesday at home.

The North Summit girls volleyball team fell to North Sanpete Thursday by three sets to two. The Braves won the second and fourth sets in the loss. North Summit is 10-2 and will face Gunnison Valley at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday on the road.

A 24-year-old man has been ordered to leave the United States after he pleaded guilty to sexually assaulting a Park City High School student.

Third District Judge Richard Mrazik sentenced Conrrado Ahuexoteco to 48 months of probation after he pleaded guilty to third-degree forcible sexual abuse, according to court documents. He also ordered Ahuexoteco, who was in the United States illegally, to leave the country.

A misdemeanor charge for obstruction of justice was dropped in return for the plea, and Mrazik signed a continuous protective order preventing Ahuexoteco from contacting the teenage girl he assaulted.

The girl, who was a Park City High School student at the time of the assault, reported the incident two days after it happened in late February, according to court documents. She agreed to a medical examination, and nurses noted her body had signs of injuries. The girl also showed investigators an Instagram account she’d found that appeared to belong to Ahuexoteco.

The girl told detectives that she went to her friend’s house near the school and was in bed, watching videos on her phone, while her friend took a shower. Ahuexoteco, who was referred to in court documents as the friend’s 24-year-old ex-boyfriend, also came to the house and asked the girl if he could watch videos with her.

He then proceeded to get into bed and touched her inappropriately despite the girl repeatedly telling him to stop.

The Park City Police Department interviewed two other minors who were at the home when the incident happened. Both said they saw Ahuexoteco in the bed with the girl. They told detectives they didn’t see the assault happen, but the girl told them about it afterward.

Investigators obtained a search warrant for Ahuexoteco’s DNA and went to his residence, but Ahuexoteco said his name was Jose and provided officers with a different unit number than the one he lived in when confronted.

The unit number he provided was on the other side of the apartment complex, but detectives watched Ahuexoteco walk into a unit with a different number than the one he’d just described. The unit he entered was the apartment they believed Ahuexoteco lived in based on his car registration.

Officers arrested and interviewed Ahuexoteco, who claimed to have met the girl two or three times. However, he insisted he “never really talked” to her and denied that he was the friend’s ex-boyfriend.

Ahuexoteco has been held in the Summit County Jail without bail since his arrest. Court documents did not indicate how the Summit County Attorney’s Office will ensure Ahuexoteco leaves the country to comply with his sentencing.

The Miners girls soccer team defeated Murray 2-0 on the road Wednesday. Park City found the back of the Murray net in the first and second halves with goals by Maddier McCallion and Reagan Bowers. The Miners are 8-1 and will face East at 3:30 p.m. at home on Tuesday. Park City is ranked 68th in the nation according to MaxPreps. 

The Miners girls volleyball team took down Northridge by three sets to two on Saturday. Park City claimed sets one, three and five in the win. The Miners are 4-4 and will face Cottonwood on the road at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday.

The Miners girls tennis team took down Murray 4-1 on Thursday at home. Park City collected wins at the one and two singles spots, as well as the one, two, three and four doubles spots. The Miners are 2-2 and will next face East on the road at 3:30 p.m. Tuesday.

Wasatch High School

The Wasatch football team fell 21-16 to Bonneville on Friday. Despite leading 10-7 at halftime, the Wasps couldn’t overcome a 14-point third quarter from Bonneville. Brody Harr had both touchdowns for Wasatch in the loss. The Wasps are 0-3 heading into Friday night’s inaugural Wasatch Back showdown against Deer Creek, who’s also looking for a first win of the season.

The Wasatch girls soccer team defeated Orem 4-3 in a penalty shootout Thursday at home. The game first went into overtime with both teams tied 1-1 after first-half goals. Savanna Hulme scored the only nonshootout goal for Wasatch. The Wasps are 7-3 and will take on Deer Creek on the road at 7 p.m. Tuesday.

The Wasatch girls volleyball team fell three sets to two to Mountain View on the road Thursday. The Wasps claimed sets two and four in the loss. Elensina Liava’a led Wasatch with 13 kills. The Wasps are 6-3 and will face Provo at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday on the road.

The Wasatch girls tennis team defeated Mountain View 5-2 on Thursday at home. The Wasps had wins at the one, two and three singles spots, and at one and two doubles. Wasatch is 6-5 and will face Timpanogos at home at 3:30 p.m. on Wednesday.

Deer Creek High School

The Deer Creek football team fell 13-10 to Jordan Friday on the road. The Riverhawks scored the first three points of the game in the third quarter but conceded all 13 to Jordan in the fourth quarter. Deer Creek quarterback Kai Betsinger connected with wideout Jake Woolstenhulme for the only Riverhawks touchdown in the fourth quarter in the loss. Deer Creek will push for their first-ever win against Wasatch Back foe Wasatch at 7 p.m. Friday at home.

The Deer Creek girls soccer team fell 3-0 to Uintah on the road Thursday. Uintah scored two goals in the first half and another in the second half. The Riverhawks are 2-7 and will face Wasatch at home at 7 p.m. Tuesday.

South Summit High School

The South Summit football team fell 34-13 on the road against Juab on Friday. A 20-0 first-quarter lead for Juab proved too much for the Wildcats, who were only outscored 14-13 from the second quarter on. Brody Larsen, Gage Woolstenhulme and Ian Mair recorded touchdowns for South Summit in the loss. The loss was the first of the season for the Wildcats, who will now face South Sevier at 7 p.m. Friday at home. 

The South Summit girls soccer team fell 6-0 to Waterford on the road Thursday. Waterford scored three goals in each half of the game. The Wildcats are 2-3 and will face Maeser Prep Academy at home at 4 p.m. Tuesday.

North Summit High School

The North Summit football team took down Rich 28-20 on the road Friday. Rich took a 7-0 lead in the first quarter, but the Braves came roaring back with 14-point second and third quarters to secure the win. Kason Richins led North Summit with three touchdowns on Friday. The Braves will next face Parowan at 7 p.m. Friday at home.

The North Summit girls soccer team fell 8-0 to the American Leadership Academy at home Thursday. ALA scored three goals in the first half and five in the second half. The Braves are 1-4 and will face Draper APA at 4 p.m. Tuesday on the road.

The North Summit girls volleyball team took down Juan Diego Catholic by three sets to none on Tuesday on the road. Quinci Vernon led the Braves with 17 kills in the win. North Summit is 10-1 and will face North Sanpete at 6:30 p.m. next Thursday at home. The Braves are ranked 10th in Utah according to MaxPreps.

The Miners girls cross country team established a dynasty in the 2000s and 2010s, winning every state title but 2007 from 2002-14. 

Park City’s 2025 girls team picked up right where the 2014 team left off, returning the program to the mountaintop and winning the state championship. The Miners top two runners on that team were then-sophomores Tatum Flach and Rhys Weidenhamer, who finished in second and 16th place, respectively, at the state meet. 

With Flach and Wiedenhamer back in the fold this season, Park City is looking to defend their girls state title and improve on the boys team’s finish of 14th place at state last year. 

The Miners began their season with the Park City Twilight meet in Quinn’s Junction on Aug. 20, when the girls team finished in eighth place and the boys team in 13th. Park City welcomed competition from larger classifications at the Twilight meet. 

“It was a big meet for us,” said Miners Head Coach Steve Cuttitta. “We had a lot of new runners and also a fair amount of returners. And for the first meet, I think the coaches were pretty pleased with our results.”

Cuttitta said a few girls missed the first meet of the season. 

The head coach believed the Twilight meet was a good stepping stone toward the second meet of the season, the UIAAA Invitational in Spanish Fork on Saturday. Park City’s girls team finished in ninth place on Saturday and the boys team in 23rd. There were again teams from all classifications in Utah the meet. 

“We have got some work to do,” Cuttitta said after the Twilight meet. “We’re not there right now, but just like last year, I think we’ll get stronger as the season goes on.”

The Miners’ next meet is the Wahsatch Rendezvous in Millcreek on Sept. 19. 

Park City’s main goal during the regular season is for everyone to slowly improve their times while also remaining healthy. They want to be ready to peak at the state meet on Oct. 28 in Salt Lake City. 

“That’s a slow process,” Cuttitta said. “It happens at practice, and the races are good checkpoints for us.”

Cuttitta said he often has a good mix of runners who spend the summer building up their endurance base and relaxing. Those who trained hard in the summer can often hit the ground running and find success in the early season meets, while those who didn’t train as often need to work toward the same base during the season.

“Obviously, for the girls, we’re hoping to repeat,” Cuttitta said. “I think if we can get everybody healthy and training that’s definitely in the cards. … I talked to the boys at camp this year, and we think top 10 is achievable for us.”

The Miners girls soccer team dominated Cottonwood 9-0 at home Thursday. Park City all but put the game on ice in the first half, scoring eight of their nine goals. Senior Hailey Olsen led the Miners with four goals. Park City is 6-1 and will next hit the road to take on Judge Memorial Catholic at 7 p.m. on Monday. Judge Memorial Catholic is 4-1.

The Miners girls volleyball team took down Deer Creek three sets to none at home on Tuesday. Sets one and three were tightly contested, with Park City winning 25-23 and 25-21, respectively, but set two was a more comfortable win, with the Miners winning 25-11. Park City was 1-1 heading into a tournament on Friday, when they took on Layton, Kearns and Cyprus. The tournament continues on Saturday with games against Viewmont, Clearfield and Northridge. 

The Miners girls tennis team fell 4-1 to Highland on the road Thursday. Park City’s one match win came at one singles from sophomore Claire Smith, who won comfortably in straight sets. The Miners are 0-2 and will hold their home opener against Juan Diego Catholic at 3:30 p.m. on Tuesday. 

Wasatch High School

The Wasatch football team fell to Mountain Crest 46-15 Aug. 21. Mountain Crest made their hay in the second and fourth quarters, outscoring the Wasps 26-0. Junior quarterback Bryce Harr, sophomore tailback Aksel Wheeler and junior wideout Wyatt Washburn led Wasatch in the game, each scoring at least a touchdown. Harr had two scores and an interception. The Wasps looked to collect their first win of the season on the road against Bonneville at 7 p.m. on Friday. 

The Wasatch girls soccer team took down Timpanogos 4-0 at home on Thursday. The Wasps scored three of their four goals in the first half. Senior Savanna Hulme led Wasatch with two goals. The Wasps are 5-3 heading into Tuesday’s road clash at 5 p.m. with Uintah.

The Wasatch girls tennis team fell to Deer Creek 7-0 at home on Tuesday. Despite losing, junior two singles player Elle Smith and sophomore three singles player Ella Cannon were able to push their matches to third sets. The Wasps headed to Saratoga Springs to play in the Westlake Open on Friday. 

The Wasatch girls volleyball team took down Payson by three sets to one at home Tuesday. The Wasps took sets one, three and four, dropping set two. Junior Elenasina Liava’a led Wasatch with 13 kills. The Wasps will next take on Uintah at home at 6:30 p.m. on Tuesday. 

Deer Creek High School

The Deer Creek football team fell to Hillcrest 53-7 on the road last Friday. The Riverhawks found the endzone in the second quarter on a pass from quarterback Kai Betsinger to Jake Woolstenhulme. Deer Creek was 0-2 heading into Friday’s road game at 7 p.m. against Jordan.

The Riverhawks are 8-6 heading into Tuesday’s road clash at 3:30 p.m. with Mountain View.

The Deer Creek girls volleyball team fell at home to South Summit three sets to one on Thursday. The Riverhawks claimed the second set, falling in sets one, three and four. Junior Hayley Rose led Deer Creek with nine kills in the loss. The Riverhawks are 1-7 heading into Tuesday’s road match at 6:30 p.m. against Summit Academy.

South Summit High School

The South Summit girls volleyball team took down Deer Creek three sets to one on the road Thursday. The Wildcats dropped the second set, taking sets one, three and four. South Summit is 2-2 and will have some time off before next facing Union on the road Sept. 10. 

The South Summit girls tennis team fell to Delta 4-2 on the road Tuesday. Senior Olivia Aston and junior Berlynn Evans collected wins at one and two singles, respectively, for the Wildcats in the loss. South Summit fell at three singles and all three doubles spots. The Wildcats are 0-3 heading into Thursday’s home match at 10 a.m. against Canyon View.

North Summit High School

The North Summit girls volleyball team took down Morgan three sets to two on the road Thursday. The Braves dropped sets two and three, taking the first, fourth and fifth sets. Senior Ellie Stephens led North Summit with 34 kills in the win. The Braves are 9-1 heading into Tuesday’s road match at 6:30 p.m. with Juan Diego Catholic.

The Park City and Wasatch High School girls soccer teams packed the stadium field at Quinn’s Junction for their rivalry game on Thursday night. 

Family and friends of the players would have to wait until the game’s second half for any celebrations, however, with the two teams going back and forth until about the middle of the second half.

Miners star midfielder Elsa Dellenbach broke the tie with 31 minutes left to go in the game, sending the crowd into a frenzy. Wasatch would equalize with 17 minutes to go, but Park City wasn’t rattled, helping to set up junior forward Riley Reese’s spectacular game-winner.

As it appeared the game was headed for extra time, Reese received the ball just outside the top of the Wasatch penalty box. She sent a curving shot screaming toward the left side of the net, where the Wasatch goalkeeper got her hands on the ball, but it slowly dribbled past her into the back of the net. The Miners players and fans roared once more. 

Park City was able to hold on in the game’s final nine minutes to secure the victory. The win moves the Miners to 2-0 this season. They also defeated Lone Peak in extra time on the road on Tuesday. 

“I’m just really excited to score,” Reese said. “I’ve been looking for shots the whole game. I was also really happy because I wanted to finish the game out without going into overtime.”

Dellenbach said a more aggressive mindset heading into the game’s second half helped Park City find the scoreboard. 

The Miners haven’t lost to their rivals since the 2023 season. 

“(It’s) good to open the season like this at home and set the tone for the rest of the season,” Dellenbach said. “Show them what we can do.”

Head coach Anthony DiCicco feels his team didn’t play their best soccer Thursday but knows the margins in soccer are thin and that it’s always important to be able to eke out wins. 

“There are a lot of things that we’ve done well,” DiCicco said. “And there are a lot of things that we have to build on. So we extract both those lessons.”

Park City will recover, do a media day and have team building activities on Friday. 

The Miners next game is a road contest against Olympus on Tuesday. 

Park City has their eyes set on playing their best soccer heading into October’s playoffs. 

“We’re always always looking toward playoffs,” Dellenbach said. “We’ve had good runs, deep runs, and I think we’re just almost there as far as becoming champions. … We’re looking forward to a good season, playing strong and getting into playoffs and hopefully competing until the end.”

Park City High School

The Miners football team’s season will start on Aug. 14 when the team takes on Sky View on the road at 7 p.m. Park City ended Sky View’s last season in the first round of the 4A playoffs before falling in the second round to eventual state champ Ridgeline. The Miners graduated 26 seniors off last year’s team and will enter next Friday’s season opener under new head coach Dennis Cunningham. 

The Miners girls volleyball team will begin their season on Aug. 18 when they face Provo on the road at 6:30 p.m. Park City is coming off a 18-12 season, which featured a three set to two loss to Provo in August of 2025. The Miners graduated nine seniors off last year’s team. Park City’s home opener will be against the new Deer Creek High School at 6:30 p.m. on Aug. 25 in Heber City.

The Miners girls tennis team gets a little longer of a summer break: The team won’t open their season until Sept. 3 at home against Murray. Park City finished 11th in the 4A state championships last fall. 

Wasatch High School

The Wasatch High School football team will open their season against Cedar at 7 p.m. next Thursday at home. The Wasps are coming off a 4-7 season, where they competed in the larger 5A classification. Wasatch dropped down to 4A because of the addition of the new Deer Creek High School in Heber City. Cedar are the defending 3A state champions.

The Wasatch girls soccer team will open their season in a rivalry matchup with Park City at 7 p.m. on Thursday on the road. The Wasps home opener will be at 5 p.m. next Thursday against Spanish Fork. Wasatch is coming off an 11-9 season where they graduated 11 seniors.

The Wasatch girls volleyball team will open their season against Salem Hills at 6:30 p.m. on Aug. 18 on the road. The Wasps home opener will be against Spanish Fork at 6:30 p.m. on Aug. 20. Wasatch is coming off a 18-12 season in which they graduated just two seniors.

Deer Creek High School

The new Deer Creek High School will take on Mountain Crest in their inaugural football game at 7 p.m. next Friday at home. Mountain Crest went 8-4 last season in 4A. Head coach DeShawn Perkins will lead the Riverhawks into battle. Deer Creek will take on Wasatch and Park City on Sept. 4 and Oct. 14, at home and on the road, respectively. 

The Deer Creek girls soccer team took on Hillcrest in its inaugural game on Tuesday morning at home. The Riverhawks will next face the Salt Lake Academy at 4 p.m. next Tuesday at home. 

The Deer Creek girls volleyball team will have its inaugural game against Delta at 8 a.m. on Aug. 22 at a neutral site. The Riverhawks will host their first game against South Summit at 6:30 p.m. on Aug. 27. Deer Creek will be led by head coach Ashley Richins. The Riverhawks will also face Park City and Wasatch this season.

The Deer Creek girls tennis team will hold its inaugural match against Pleasant Grove on the road at 3:30 p.m. Monday. The Riverhawks’ first home match will be against Timpanogos at 3:30 p.m. on Sept. 3. Deer Creek will be led by head coach Peachy Quinton. 

South Summit High School

The South Summit football team will open their season against Duchesne at 5 p.m. on Aug. 15 at home. The Wildcats are coming off an 8-5 season where they reached the 2A state championship game. South Summit graduated 17 seniors off last year’s team. The Wildcats fell 29-20 to Duchesne. in last year’s season opener.

The South Summit girls soccer team will open their season against Union at 4 p.m. on Tuesday on the road. The Wildcats’ home opener will be against Beaver at 4 p.m. Monday. South Summit went 8-10 last season, graduating six players.

The South Summit girls volleyball team will open their season against Juab at 6:30 p.m. next Tuesday at home. The Wildcats are coming off a 5-24 season where they graduated four seniors. 

The South Summit girls tennis team will open their season against Juab at 11 a.m. next Tuesday at home. The Wildcats are led by head coach Jacki Cuertas.

North Summit High School

The North Summit football team will open their season against Enterprise at 7 p.m. next Friday on the road. The Braves’ home opener will be against rival South Summit at 7 p.m. the following Friday. North Summit is coming off a 6-6 season in which they graduated eight seniors.

The North Summit girls soccer team will open their season against Gunnison Valley at 4 p.m. next Tuesday at home. The Braves are coming off a 4-15 season in which they graduated eight seniors. 

The North Summit girls volleyball team will open their season against Copper Hills at 6:30 p.m. next Tuesday at home. The Braves are the defending 2A state champs. North Summit graduated only one senior off that state championship team.

Many Miners girls soccer players got in their final preparations for the upcoming season during last week’s Park City Extreme Cup. 

While the Park City U17 cup team fell on Friday morning to a team from Idaho in their second-to-last game of the tournament, players walked away with smiles. Coach Anthony DiCicco, who also leads the Miners team, said he believes the team made progress throughout the tournament whether they won, lost or drew. 

“We were better in the first half of this game than we were in the second half of yesterday’s game, and we were better in the second half of yesterday’s game than we were in the first half of yesterday’s game,” DiCicco said. “We just have to keep building that momentum. Playing against better teams and good competition is great for us and certainly gives us the opportunity to develop.”

Park City players Stella Arend and Brooklyn Mascardo said they think the team worked hard and grew closer last week. Arend will be a junior midfielder for the Miners team and Mascardo a junior goalkeeper. Both players were on varsity last season as sophomores. 

“It’s important to get on this beautiful field and get touches, try to score and just bond with the people around you,” Mascardo said. “So when you get into high school and get in that pressure-filled environment, you can work together and know each other’s strengths and weaknesses.”

Mascardo said much of that team had been playing in the cup together for about six years. Arend and her family had moved to Park City her eighth-grade year, making her a relative newcomer with only a couple of years of experience. 

DiCicco, Arend and Mascardo will open the high school season Tuesday against Lone Peak at 3:30 p.m. on the road. Lone Peak is a larger, 6A opponent from Highland who made the 6A state championship game last season. The Miners’ home opener will be against rival Wasatch at the fields at Quinn’s Junction at 7 p.m. Thursday. 

“The girls, coaches and parents are excited,” DiCicco said. “We open the season for the varsity team with a return fixture to Lone Peak on Tuesday after playing a great game with them last year where they found a late winner and beat us 1-0. I know the girls are really excited to have another opportunity against such a high-level competitor.”

DiCicco’s girls team has set a high standard for soccer in Park City over the last few years. They reached the 4A state title game in 2023 and went 15-4 and 17-4 the last two seasons, respectively. The Miners only graduated three seniors off last year’s team. 

“It’s a group that is continually pushing to the highest standards in the state,” DiCicco said. “It’s about extracting the lessons from all of those seasons. … It’s a big senior class who recognize there’s a tremendous opportunity in front of them and want to do everything that they can to take advantage of that.”

The Miners have players who are already committed to play college soccer. The team will likely be among the contenders for the 4A state championship in October. 

“We will play senior night over at the newly renovated Dozier at the end of September,” DiCicco said. “But for all of our other games, we’ll be over at Quinn’s and certainly encourage the community to come out and support the girls. … The fields are in tremendous shape. The Park City Recreation staff deserves a tremendous amount of credit. In fact, two college teams from Utah have already been up to train on it, Weber State was up, and today, UVU.”
