Much to the dismay of Park City High School’s boys’ and girls’ golf head coach George Murphy, it’s tough to win the state championship for almost a decade straight while going unnoticed. Murphy was recently nominated for the 2017 Governor’s State of Sport Awards for Coach of the Year.

“It’s nice to be nominated,” Murphy said. “There’s some great coaches that are nominated.”

Other coaches in the running are Greg Maas, men’s soccer coach at Utah Valley University; Brandon Matich, football coach at East High School; and Jennifer Rockwood, the women’s soccer coach at Brigham Young University.

Murphy’s nomination among the state’s best coaches is well-deserved. He led the boys’ golf team at the high school to nine consecutive UHSAA 3A state titles, with the latest coming in October, while the girls’ team has secured third and two second places the last three seasons. The girls’ team is again expected to be among the best teams in 3A this spring, the season in which it competes in.

Despite him being the common factor, Murphy feels his nomination is thanks to the collective effort of everyone, specifically the program’s athletes.

“I’d rather have my team nominated for the team sport than individually as a coach,” Murphy said. “I just feel like there’s been great support. I’ve been fortunate enough to work with great kids.”

The kids’ attitudes are partly due to the winning culture Murphy established at Park City.

“As a coach, you want to feel like you’ve had a part in creating a program that kids want to be a part of,” Murphy said. “Even younger kids that are growing up in this area want to be part of Park City High School golf.”

Murphy also credited the three golf courses — Park Meadows Country Club, Park City Golf Course and Jeremy Golf and Country Club — that allowed him and his team to use their venues for practices and competitions.

“The three courses we have here have been awesome and very supportive,” Murphy said. “We probably get five months left of golf throughout the year with the snow, but the head pros at each one of those courses have been solid and supportive.”

The current run for Park City High School golf is not something you see every day, Murphy said. This spring, the girls’ team will be aiming for its first state title, while the boys’ team will go for its 10th-straight championship next fall.

As always, all good things must come to an end, but Murphy doesn’t want to think about that.

“It’s not anything that I’m doing,” Murphy said. “It’s more about the time and effort that the kids are putting in, the determination. They want to reach that same level that the teams before them have reached and it’s really fun to watch and carry over.

“I know it’s not going to last forever, but it’s sure been a fun ride.”

Also in the running for Coach of the Year is Matich, who has Park City ties. The head football coach at East held the same position at Park City High School prior to accepting the job with the Leopards back in 2010. Matich recently led East to a UHSAA 4A State Championship win in 2016.
