Residents across the Wasatch Back were shaken awake by an earthquake in Wasatch County early Thursday morning.

The University of Utah Seismograph Stations reported a minor 3.9 magnitude earthquake around 12:11 a.m. The epicenter of the earthquake was approximately 12 miles northwest of Strawberry Reservoir.

More than 142 people had already reported feeling the earthquake by the time the University of Utah Seismograph Stations posted a press release around 12:23 a.m.

Anyone who felt the earthquake is encouraged to fill out a survey form by visiting earthquake.usgs.gov/earthquakes/eventpage/uu80106731/tellus.

The American Red Cross of Utah is also reminding residents to always have emergency kits readily available, as well as emergency plans for future disasters.

“With over 100,000 earthquakes occurring worldwide each year, and Utah being no stranger to seismic activity, preparation is key to ensuring families and communities remain safe during these events,” said Heidi Ruster, CEO of the American Red Cross Utah and Nevada Region.

The nonprofit organization encouraged families to have a “home go-kit” with food and water, shelter materials, safety tools, communication devices, personal items and important documents in addition to an emergency car kit with food and water, emergency blankets, flashlights and “car tools,” such as jumper cables and spare tires.

The University of Utah Seismograph Stations have reported a total of 58 earthquakes with a magnitude of two or greater within a 15-mile radius from Thursday’s epicenter since 1981. The largest earthquake prior to this week was a 3.6 magnitude event on June 9, 2021.
