The former home of the Kimball Art Center along Kearns Boulevard is demolished on Tuesday, one of the last structures to be cleared from the area in preparation for City Hall’s proposed arts and culture district.

Locals picked up their trash bags and trash pickers to clean up Park City on Saturday in honor of Earth Day. Recycle Utah and the Swaner EcoCenter hosted organized efforts along the Rail Trail, in Prospector and in Kimball Junction where more than 150 people turned up to collect litter.

A crew with heavy machinery continued to demolish buildings on City Hall land located off the corner of the Bonanza Drive-Kearns Boulevard intersection, where leaders want to develop an arts and culture district. Important meetings about the district are scheduled this week.

For nearly four years, leaders have intended to create a district stretching inward from the intersection on a little more than 5 acres of land acquired by City Hall in a $19.5 million deal with the Bonanza Park partnership.

The Kimball Art Center and the Utah offices of the Sundance Institute are envisioned as the anchors of a project that would also involve workforce or otherwise restricted housing and transportation infrastructure alongside artist studios and other spaces meant to advance the arts.

A pair of sandhill cranes forage for food on the Swaner Preserve on Friday. The reemergence of cranes is a sure sign of spring in Park City, and Parkites and visitors have long enjoyed catching a glimpse of the birds on the preserve’s wetlands and other places throughout the area.
