Utah Conservatory is pleased to announce the hiring of trumpet and french horn teacher, Colin Carter. Colin brings an upbeat and energetic enthusiasm to his music and teaching, and we are very pleased to announce his arrival.

Carter’s first day with Utah Conservatory is set for Thursday, July 9. He will be teaching Thursdays ongoing, and even hopes to open a second day in the coming months. 

Utah Conservatory will be offering free trial lessons for any trumpet or french horn students that wish to meet with him for a 30-minute trial lesson, any time in the month of July.

His fall recurring schedules, and individual summer schedules are now open. 

Raised in Utah, Carter graduated from Hillcrest High School and is attending the University of Utah on scholarships, where he is pursuing medicine and majoring in French Horn Performance.

Carter plays several instruments, namely piano, french horn, trumpet, mellophone and the alp horn.

Playing music for 15 years, Carter loves to share what he has learned with other musicians. He has excelled as a musician, performing as a featured soloist and playing with the varsity jazz and concert bands at state festivals.

For several years he played in the Lyceum Philharmonic, the top youth orchestra in the state of Utah.

While part of this group, Carter performed with artists and musicians such as Lexi Walker, Jenny Oaks Baker, David Archuleta, Gentri and Nathan Pacheco. 

Additionally, he participated in the recording of an album and several music videos. Serving an ecclesiastical mission for his church in Peru, Carter is also fluent in Spanish and enjoys connecting with people from across Latin America.

Seven Summit County students from Park City and North Summit High Schools recently attended the CSMusic.net Annual Convention and International Singing Competition, sponsored by Classical Singing Magazine, May 22-25 at the Sheraton Boston Hotel in Boston, Massachusetts.

Utah Conservatory students Reid Kofford, Sophia Strachan, Molly Roh, Izzy Vogel,

McKinslee Mitchell and Clara Cervelli competed in both classical and Musical Theatre Rounds.

Emma Jasenovic — also a Utah Conservatory student — was joined by Park City High School senior Naomi O’Connor in the Musical Theatre Rounds, and both received semi-finalist status along with Cervelli.

The CSMusic.net Convention also featured four days of performance master classes taught by industry professionals, including voice and theatre faculty from prestigious programs of colleges throughout the country, including Julliard School, University of Southern California, Brigham Young University, Cincinnati Conservatory of Music, Berklee College, Boston College, Chapman University, Northwestern University, DePaul University, Vanderbilt University and Carnegie Mellon School of Music.

The colleges and universities in attendance gave out scholarships totaling more than $5,000,0000 in addition to prize money for winners in the high school, college and emerging professional categories.

Three of the local students received scholarships that can be used for summer study at Utah Conservatory over this summer.

The contestants from the Wasatch Back were accompanied on piano by Utah Conservatory Executive Director Debra Cook.

“I’ve been attending this convention with students for the past 20 years, and this convention and competition has been responsible for a growth in the overall quality of singing in our nation,” Cook said. “Additionally, every student that has attended this conference has been able to matriculate to the college of their choice, as the standard for acceptance is set from the knowledge and skills they pursue from this event and the relationships built with the college recruiters.”

Although Cook has never seen three local singers of the usually 600 in attendance reach semi-finals, the point is not about winning, she said.

“It’s about the root of competition, which is a measure of one’s competence in a variety of areas in any discipline,” she said. “For performers, it is a rating of musicality, singing techniques, acting and one’s specificity in following one’s attention from one moment to the next in a genuine communication while immersed in the viewpoint of a character.”

That leads to mastery of the ability to find significance, Cook said.

“The competition provides a platform to learn and develop those abilities with specificity.”

The course includes instruction from seasoned, well-known professionals who are working and producing on Broadway, Carnegie Hall and Lincoln Center.

The Utah Conservatory Juilliard Broadway Showcase Camp gives Utah students a unique perspective into New York, introduces them to theater professionals, hones singing, acting and staging skills and concludes with gala showcases and productions similar to the "coming out" agent showcases given by college seniors around the country.

The students stay at the famous Julliard school dorms in Lincoln Center as they train with several NYC coaches and teachers. This makes for a very busy eight days of acting, singing, dancing, attending Broadway shows, union visits and back stage tours.

Students also visit performing-arts programs, colleges and Broadway performers; all this while producing and advertising two days of showcases intended for industry professionals, including agents, casting directors and even a few friends and family members.

This year, the students coached with seven professional coaches while at the NYC Juilliard Camp, including Joan Kruegar, the 2009 Classical Singer Magazine Coach of the Year and Judith Fredricks, Music Theatre and Opera Coach and Director of Opera New York.

Other coaches included AMDA faculty and freelance teachers.

Debra Cook prepares showcases with the students leading up to the trip, assisted by acting coach, Dr. Fredric Cook and local choreographer, Ellie Gallagher.

This summer, ten young ladies from age nine to 23, attended the camp, including Parkites Eloise Johnson, Susie Carroll, Emma Fox, Hana Gottlieb, Hannah Richard, Erin Roach, Ellie Fischer, Hana Oden and Zoe Heiden.

Elise Trejo, from Davis County, also attended for her third year in a row.
