John and Paige Courtney have joined with three-time Olympian skier Devin Logan to open The Bake Shop this weekend in Kimball Junction.

The 1,200-square-foot bakery and café with 16 seats will open at 1154 Center Drive, across the street from the Courtneys’ Chop Shop.

The menu features three main sections, including “Dough & Sweets,” “Grab ‘n’ Go,” and “Coffee & Such.” Dough & Sweets includes sourdough batard; baguettes; brioche; sourdough English muffins; sourdough pita; croissant; pain au chocolate; kouign-amann; Zukerkuchen; a variety of Danish; banana bread; zucchini muffins; chocolate chip cookies; brown butter brown sugar cookies; butter & barley ice cream; and custom cakes.

In addition to pour-over coffee, there’s also hot tea and iced drinks on tap, including nitro matcha, Vietnamese coffee, and kombucha.

On the savory side, The Bake Shop offers a house salad, hummus, house-made turkey on baguette, tomato mozzarella on baguette, ham & cheese on brioche, breakfast sandwiches on English muffins, seasonal quiche, Locals Only jam, and Miss Katie’s Egg Casserole, which combines savory egg pudding with leftover bread, sausages and peppers.

The three partners are sharing responsibility for daily operations in and out of the kitchen.

John Courtney, a former banker, graduated from San Francisco Culinary School in 2007 and went to work at three-Michelin Star Restaurant La Bouitte in San Martin de Belleville in Savoy, France. He worked at several restaurants until opening Chop Shop Park City in 2020 with wife Paige.

Chop Shop has earned a number of accolades, including Salt Lake City Weekly’s Best (third best restaurant in Park City, behind Riverhorse on Main and Hearth & Hill) in 2021. John was a Season 43 Chopped Champion, earned the Rising Star Chef Award for his work with Yardbird in 2014, and was the BOH Brawl Champion in Las Vegas in 2019.

“I’ve worked in so many restaurants in my life, and I think this will be a perfect complement to Chop Shop, which has completely different offerings. We all feel that this is going to be a hit for Park City-area bread and baked goods lovers,” said John. “We’re so excited to get the doors open, and we’re really excited to introduce our pour-over coffee service, which produces some really delicious coffee that complements our pastries very well.”

Paige Courtney has worked in the food service industry since she was 15 years old, working her way up the food chain from Hawaii to Nashville to New Orleans before heading back to school at the age of 27. After moving to Las Vegas, she graduated summa cum laude from UNLV’s hospitality school. Before joining Chop Shop Park City six months after it opened, she was the food and beverage director of the Waldorf Astoria in Park City.

Paige, who won the Ketel One Moscow Mule Competition in Las Vegas in 2014, is a Level 2 sommelier for the Court of Master Sommeliers.

“I have really enjoyed immersing myself in the culinary side, while introducing our brown butter chocolate chip cookie and our local honey lemonade,” said Paige. “I’m always interested in growth in this industry, which I’ve found more interesting than any other industry I’ve worked in.”

Devin Logan is a three-time Olympian who was the inaugural Olympic silver medalist in slopestyle skiing in 2014. A recent Westminster College graduate, she found her passion for food while off the slopes after retiring in 2022, she said.

“I have always loved cooking and started cooking more and more for myself and teammates while traveling for skiing,” said Logan. “Like most others, I started baking during the pandemic, and that passion has continued to grow. I am fortunate enough to have found a passion off of the slopes, and I’m excited about turning it into my second career.”

The Bake Shop’s walls are adorned with art by Park City local artist and photographer Jared McMillen, who owns and operates McMillen Fine Art Photography at 505 Main St.

SALT LAKE CITY — Speaker Brad Wilson announced his intent to resign from the Utah House of Representatives and step down as speaker of the House, effective Nov. 15.

Wilson was elected to represent House District 15 in 2011 and has served as speaker of the House since January 2019 after receiving a unanimous vote of approval. 

“Serving in the Utah House of Representatives and as speaker of the House has been the honor, privilege, and opportunity of a lifetime — and I don’t say that lightly,” said Wilson. “I did not anticipate the lifelong impact of my decision to run for public office nearly 14 years ago. My service in the Legislature stems far beyond the policies passed and progress achieved. I have built lifelong friendships and come to love and appreciate the people of Utah. I am excited for my next chapter and have full confidence in my peers in the House, Senate, and executive branch to continue making Utah the best place to live, learn, work, and play.”

Throughout his time in the Legislature, Wilson assumed a variety of roles and responsibilities aside from speaker of the House, including serving as House majority leader, House majority assistant whip, and vice chair of the Executive Appropriations Committee.

Wilson’s office said he championed policies to make Utah one of the strongest, best managed, and most business and family-friendly states in the nation. He led efforts to relocate the Utah State Prison, expand funding for state parks, public education, and transportation, preserve and restore the Great Salt Lake, bring long-term planning to the Legislature, and reduce taxes by over $1 billion, according to his office.

He will continue serving as speaker of the House until Nov. 15 at 5 p.m.

With his eyes on qualifying for the Pyeongchang Winter Olympics in two months, snowboarder Red Gerard of Silverthorne showed out on Wednesday, finishing in second on the slopestyle course ahead of Saturday morning’s snowboard slopestyle finals.

Gerard was one of a dozen snowboarders to make the cut for Saturday’s final from an original group of 27, as Stale Sandbech of Norway easily took first heading into the weekend. Sandbech finished nearly 10 points ahead of any other rider, with a 90.33. Gerard took second with an 80.66 while Sandbech’s countryman Mons Roisland tallied a 78.33 for third.

Just three days ago, Roisland won the U.S. Grand Prix Big Air event at Copper Mountain Resort, besting another snowboarder from Silverthorne, Chris Corning, who took second place at the Grand Prix despite a sudden hip injury. On Wednesday, Corning gutted through the pain once again to tally a 71.00 in the slopestyle qualifier, good enough for 10th place and a spot in Saturday’s final.

Americans Brock Crouch (76.66), Judd Henkes (74.33) and Nicholas Baden (70.66) also qualified for Saturday. Like the Big Air Grand Prix at Copper last week, the Dew Tour slopestyle final is a U.S. Ski & Snowboard Olympic qualifying event, as are the rest of the men’s and women’s halfpipe and slopestyle snowboarding and skiing competitions taking place at this week’s Dew Tour.

Men’s ski superpipe

Just five days after he won the U.S. Grand Prix ski halfpipe championship at Copper Mountain Resort, reigning Olympic halfpipe gold medalist David Wise ended Wednesday’s qualification stage just as he concluded at Copper: in first place.

Wise’s 93.33 led a dominant American performance on the halfpipe on Wednesday, as five other Americans followed up the favorite. Alexander Ferreira qualified in second (89.66), Aspen’s Torin Yater-Wallace in third (88.33), Birk Irving in fourth (87.33), Gus Kensworthy in fifth (85.33) and Aaron Blunck in sixth place (84.00).

The United States’ Kyle Smaine (10th place, 82.33) and Taylor Seaton of Avon (12th place, 81.33) also qualified for Friday’s final.

Ladies snowboard slopestyle

American Jamie Anderson heads into Saturday’s final with Wednesday’s impressive high score of a 90.00, well ahead of second place finisher Spencer O’Brien of Canada (86.66).

Anderson’s fellow American Hailey Langland took third place Wednesday with a score of 84.00. And three days after she took second place at the U.S. Grand Prix Big Air finals at Copper, American Julia Marino qualified for Saturday’s final with a fifth place finish and score of 78.00.

Ladies ski superpipe

Cassie Sharpe of Canada was able to edge Marie Martinod of France, last week’s U.S. Grand Prix ladies ski superpipe champion, during Wednesday’s qualifier. Sharpe tallied an 88.33, exactly two points better than Martinod’s mark of 86.33.

Three American women finished 3-6 on Wednesday, led by Brita Sigourney’s 85.33, Devin Logan’s 83.66 and Maddie Bowman’s 81.00. Americans Annalisa Drew (seventh place, 78.33) and Carly Margulies (eighth place, 76.00) also qualified for Friday’s final.

The men’s ski superpipe finals will take place from 9 to 10:15 a.m. on Friday. The women’s ski superpipe finals will follow from 11:30 to 11:45 a.m.

The ladies snowboard slopestyle finals will take place from 9 to 9:45 a.m. on Saturday. The men’s snowboard slopestyle finals will follow from 10:15 to 11:30 a.m. on Saturday.

Competition continues Thursday with snowboard men’s and women’s superpipe qualifiers and ski men’s and women’s slopestyle qualifiers taking place throughout the day at Breckenridge Ski Resort.

Twenty-four medalists from the 2014 Sochi Olympics will take part in the Winter Dew Tour at Breckenridge Ski Resort from Dec. 14-17, which will also double as an 2018 Pyeongchang Winter Olympics qualifying event for the United States and Canada.

The Dew Tour’s men’s and women’s halfpipe and slopestyle snowboarding and skiing competitions will serve as U.S. Ski & Snowboard Olympic qualifying events. The event will also serve as a selection event for the Canadian men’s and women’s snowboard slopestyle teams.

Para athletes will also be able to gain valuable Paralympic 2018 qualifying points via a world para snowboard Nor-Am competition.

More than 12 hours of the Dew Tour will be broadcast on NBC and NBCSN, while DewTour.com will live stream all event finals Friday through Sunday. All event finals will also broadcast live on Facebook, Periscope, Twitch, Daily Motion, Youtube and the Dew Tour app, including live scoring.

“The Dew Tour is a massive event every year for freeskiers, but the stakes are even higher this year with it being an Olympic qualifier,” Gus Kenworthy, 2014 Sochi silver medalist in ski slopestyle, said in a press release. “It’s always a great event to kick off the winter competition season.”

Men’s & Women’s Ski Halfpipe

David Wise of the U.S. will defend his reigning men’s ski halfpipe title from 2015, as last year’s halfpipe events were snowed out. The preceeding year’s champion, Torin Yater-Wallace of the U.S., will also compete, as will other top contenders Kevin Rolland and Benoit Valentin of France and Kenworthy of the U.S.

On the women’s side, Sochi gold medalist Maddie Bowman of the U.S. is the favorite, as she will look to add to her career Dew Tour haul of five Dew Tour medals. Cassie Sharpe of Canada, sister to snowboarder Darcy Sharpe, and France’s Marie Martinod are also top contenders.

Men’s & Women’s Ski Slopestyle

Henrik Harlaut of Sweden, the 2016 Dew Tour champion, returns this year to defend his title as it appears Oystein Braaten of Norway may be his strongest competition after the Norwegian won X Games gold earlier this year in Aspen and Norway.

Kenworthy will also compete in this event as will his fellow American, Sochi ski slopestyle medalist Nick Goepper.

For the women, Sochi gold medalist Dara Howell of Canada continues to strengthen her runs with tricks. Looking to best her will be French rising star Tess Ledeux, who earlier this year won X Games silver. Seasoned American Devin Logan is another favorite to secure a podium spot.

Men’s & Women’s Snowboard Halfpipe

Two-time Olympic halfpipe gold medalist Shaun White returns to Breckenridge this year. White’s fellow American Danny Davis may be the most stylish rider in this discipline, which challenges the entire field from getting too comfortable.

International contenders include Japanese riders Ayumu Hirano, Taku Hiraoka and Raibu Katayama. And on the women’s side, the Americans have a strong contingent vying for podium spots, including Kelly Clark, Chloe Kim, Elena Hight and Maddie Mastro.

Men’s & Women’s Snowboard Slopestyle

Canadian Mark McMorris will ride to protect his five-peat at Dew Tour, though he will have to fend off a field packed with talent who are pushing the sport to new levels.

This motley crew includes Marcus Kleveland of Norway, Sebastien Toutant and Max Parrot of Canada, and Red Gerard (Silverthorne) and Brock Crouch of the United States.

The women’s slopestyle competition will center around international powerhouses Spencer O’Brien of Canada and Enni Rukajärvi of Finland, though the U.S. brings depth to this event as well. That group includes snowboarding’s most decorated women’s slopestyle athlete, American Jamie Anderson, who will defend her 2016 Dew Tour title.

Looking to knock Anderson off will be countrymates Hailey Langland and Julia Marino.

Men’s & Women’s Para Snowboarding

This will be para snowboarding’s second year at Dew Tour though it will serve as a World Para Nor-Am competition for the first time.

A new para discipline that will make its Olympic debut this year, the banked slalom, will take place Friday, Dec. 15. And the U.S. team that swept the Para-Snowboardcross podium in Sochi in 2014 — Evan Strong, Keith Gabel and Mike Shea — are all scheduled to compete, as is Sochi women’s Para Snowboardcross bronze medalist Amy Purdy of the U.S.

Streetstyle

This open jam format event, one where the world’s best urban skiers and riders showcase themselves under the lights, returns to downtown Breckenridge on Friday, Dec. 15, at 6 p.m. The snowboard competition is up for grabs this year as four-time winner Darcy Sharpe of Canada is solely focusing on slopestyle at this year’s Dew Tour. Last year’s ski winner and Sharpe’s fellow Canadian Alex Bellemare will compete again. The streetstyle course will be open to the public on Saturday and Sunday after Friday’s competition.

Team Challenge

This year’s three-part Team Challenge course will feature a slopestyle course with a jib and a jump section, and the halfpipe will house the pipe section. Each team will have a captain and three athletes: one each for the jib, jump and pipe sections. Snowboard companies Burton, Nitro, Salomon, Rome, Ride and DC will all field teams for the Team Challenge, as will ski companies Faction, Armada, Head, Atomic, Volkl and K2.

Burton and Atomic defend their titles after last year’s inaugural event.

All competitions and fan zones — both on and off-mountain — are free and open to the public. This year’s concert, featuring The Floozies and Anomalie, and Dew Tour VIP packages are ticketed.

One hundred days before the Feb. 9 open of the 2018 Pyeongchang Winter Olympic games, the International Ski Federation last week unveiled designs for the event’s slopestyle course.

The German action sport infrastructure company Schneestern designed the Olympic course, which will be located at the snow park within the Bokwang Phoenix Park ski resort in Pyeonchang County.

“We are super excited to build the Slopestyle and Big Air Course for PyeongChang 2018,” Schneestern said in an Instagram post. “We simply can’t wait for this chance!”

The Olympic course is largely based on the Slopestyle World Cup course that was also designed by Schneestern and hosted at Phoenix Park in February 2016.

However, the International Ski Federation says the Germany-based company has added and adjusted some elements from the 2016 course.

“Looking to improve even further a course that was already heralded for its inventiveness by many of the world’s top slopestyle athletes at the test event two seasons ago,” the FIS said in a statement.

The FIS added that some features on the course were shifted from left to right to improve camera angles for television needs, while the fifth section of the course “now offers even more possibilities for creativity.”

“By adding new lines and creative options for the athletes, too,” the FIS statement added, “and giving the course a unique and intriguing look for millions of viewers around the world, the Schneestern crew has lived up to the expectations to deliver a groundbreaking competition venue.”

The course, which will be the first mainstream slopestyle course to incorporate a skate-inspired pool or snow bowl, is expected to challenge Olympic competitors after 2016’s test event took place in icy and windy conditions at Phoenix Park.

American snowboarder Sage Kotsenburg won the 2014 Olympic gold medal in the men’s snowboard slopestyle event in Sochi, Russia. American snowboarder Jamie Anderson took home the gold in the women’s snowboard slopestyle event.

American skiers Joss Christensen, Gus Kensworthy and Nick Goepper swept the gold, silver and bronze medals respectively in the men’s skiing slopestyle event in Sochi. American skier Devin Logan earned the silver medal in the female skiing slopestyle event.
