In a community like Park City where academic excellence and celebrating diversity is a shared value, the journey beyond high school may seem straightforward. For first-generation students, the first in their families to pursue college, the path often looks very different.

These students shoulder unique challenges, navigating systems that can feel unfamiliar with few guides to show the way.

To be first-generation is to lead courageously. It’s sitting in a college planning meeting with no family experience to draw from. It’s advocating for yourself in conversations that might feel foreign, completing financial documents without a safety net, and pushing through the pressure of being the first to take this step. It’s often about balancing ambition with responsibility, hope with uncertainty.

Over the years, Park City has come to recognize a powerful truth: When we support first-generation students, we enrich our entire community. These students bring grit, empathy and a profound sense of purpose into our schools. Their bravery challenges the status quo and reminds us that success isn’t measured by where you start, but by the distance you travel and the resilience you carry with you.

Historically, first-generation students have had to chart their own course, often quietly and without fanfare.

In Park City, that narrative has been changing for well over a decade. Our schools and community made a conscious shift, not only in the support offered, but also in how we view these students.

No longer defined by what they may lack, first-generation students are increasingly celebrated for their assets, the strength, insight, and determination they bring to our classrooms and beyond.

Still, there is more to be done. Supporting first-generation students means listening to their stories, validating their experiences, and ensuring they all have access to the tools they need to thrive. It’s about removing barriers and replacing them with bridges.

Together with Park City Education Foundation and our high school team, we’re taking the next step by hiring a Bright Futures counselor funded by the foundation who will support every First-Generation student on their post-secondary journey.

These young people are not just changing their own lives. They’re changing the trajectory of generations to come. More importantly, they’re redefining what’s possible in the Park City School District.

As a first-generation student, I’ve experienced this journey, the uncertainty, determination and quiet hope that someone might believe in me. I’m here today because someone did. They saw beyond the circumstances, recognized my potential, and chose to walk beside me.

Now, it’s our responsibility and privilege to walk alongside those following in our footsteps by continuing to evolve the ways we support, uplift and empower first-generation students.

Their success is not just personal. It’s a reflection of a community that chooses to grow with them.

Park City community and families: It is with great pleasure and excitement that I introduce myself as your new superintendent of schools.

I’m honored to have the opportunity to serve this remarkable community and to support the success of our students, staff, and schools. Building strong relationships and establishing a culture of trust are at the core of my leadership philosophy.

I believe in the power of an inclusive school environment where every student feels valued and supported. Equally important is the connection between students and staff, as these relationships are the cornerstone of a meaningful and successful educational journey.

My commitment is to cultivate an atmosphere of respect, collaboration, and open communication — one where everyone works together to empower our students to thrive.

As your superintendent, I’m dedicated to connection, collaboration, equity and transparency. While I strive for complete openness in our journey together, there will be times when we must prioritize the protection of private information. In these instances, it is my hope that the trust we develop through our shared dedication to these principles will afford understanding and grace.

Together, we’ll build on the many strengths of our district and community to ensure continued success for all. Every student, regardless of background or circumstance, deserves access to an enriching, high-quality education that prepares them for a promising future.

Lastly, I express my gratitude for the trust you place in us to care for and educate your children. I’m fully committed to ensuring every student has a safe and enriching educational experience. All students are capable of achieving high levels of learning, and I see it as my responsibility to provide our staff with the resources and support they need to make that a reality.

In the coming weeks, my goal is to meet with as many members of our community as possible. Building these connections is essential, as I work to fully integrate into the community.
